Lovingly restored Victorian country house with large interesting garden

5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 13 Apr 2015
We stayed two nights in this lovely quiet Victorian house, which is set in fields just outside Masterton. Hosts Robin and Elizabeth were extremely welcoming and helpful. Our very large ensuite room was clean and beautifully furnished, with a comfortable bed, dressing table, sofa, table and chairs and tea and coffee making facilities. There is a small fridge for guest use in the hall. Although the ensuite shower room was rather cramped, we also had use of the shared next door bathroom, with a claw-foot bath and walk-in shower. Breakfast, cooked by Elizabeth, was good and copious.

The garden is full of interesting features, including a cottage garden, a woodland walk (with statuary), an orchard and vegetable garden and a landscaped lawn in front - all the work of Elizabeth and Colin. Old farm machinery and an old cart are also on display. Alpaca and sheep graze adjoining fields which also belong to the property, and there is also a golden pheasant which visits regularly.

One point worth noting is that Masterton is some way (55km) from Martinborough, the centre of the Wairarapa wine district, and is not well served by good restaurants. The best is probably Farriers, where we ate both the two evenings we were there.

We chose this place simply because it was approx half way between Wellington Ferry and Napier and it turned out to be a good choice. Even though we were staying just the one night the hosts were very welcoming and it was a fascinating house to stay in. Like something from another era but very well appointed and comfortable. Recommended.

Room tip: This is in the middle of the countryside so al rooms are quiet and well appointed.

What an amazing experience! Wonderful grounds, atmosphere and superb hosts. Nothing was too much trouble. I cannot think of a more delightful setting for a wedding. Our family and friends came from around the world and NZ and were uniform in their praise. Thank you!

We stayed at Llandaff over the weekend, as part of a bridal party who had booked the entire B&B. From the moment we arrived, Robin and Elizabeth looked after our every need including ironing bridesmaids dresses, accommodating last-minute breakfast arrangements and also making breakfast at 6.30am for the early travellers.

The rooms were extremely clean, spacious, well-appointed and cozy. There were also tea facilities in some rooms and in the hallway. Breakfast was a well thought-out event- not only was there a generous spread of toast, cereals, yoghurt, Robin also took individual orders for hot breakfasts and served each order not long later.

We enjoyed sitting out on the front verandah (where there is sometimes a very friendly cat!) and also in the plush living room, with a glass of wine/ coffee/ tea in hand. There is also lots of animals to keep families and children entertained, including alpacas, sheep, deer, sheep, doves and a pheasant.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Llandaff. We certainly enjoyed our conversation with Elisabeth and Robin as we had our early breakfast before leaving, and will not hesitate to recommend this place to anyone looking for genuine, warm NZ hospitality in a beautiful country home setting.

We had high hopes for this place and were not disappointed at all. Elizabeth and Robin are dedicated to giving you the full experience of their wonderful home, with its history, their furniture and interesting collections. Then outdoors - numerous 'sheds' with more collections, and their beautiful grounds with lovely little walks and where you'll see pheasants, doves, and alpacas. We stayed 2 nights but could have stayed a week easily to fully enjoy Llandaff, learn more history from our hosts, and spend more time wine tasting and seeing more of the beautiful region. Next time hopefully.

Room tip: King room with ensuite.
