Great Weekend at Llandaff

5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 14 Aug 2013
It was a real privilege to stay at the lovely Llandaff! We stayed with another four couples recently.
The Hosts were delightful, helpful and enjoyable. The charms of yesteryear were all around you.
From the doves that hovered around the dove loft to the alpacas being feed and the real feel of Country!
Top marks to the lovely hosts...note to self...we will come again someday!

We have stayed at Llandaff twice, the first time when living in NZ in 2004 and again this spring when we returned to show our daughter where she spent her first years. The accommodation was beautiful, comfortable, and Robin and Elizabeth delightful both times. They were always ready to answer questions about where to eat and what to do and how to get there, and rang one of their many connections if they did not know themselves. We opted for the home cooked meal one evening and it was well worth it! Our daughter enjoyed the rural atmosphere both times, wandering around the garden and looking at the many animals and one very colorful pheasant. We would highly recommend staying here to anyone visiting the Waiarapa.

Location a little out of town and well away from the road. On arriving we passed some deer and llama farm lands from the neighbours before we arrived at this 1890 mansion. We stayed only one night and since we were the only guests, we could choose from the several beautifully decorated rooms. Naturally we took the large front side “Bridal Suite” (58 m2) with king-size bed and en-suite modern shower room (4m2, with very large shower), but we could also use the classic bathroom with the old style lion claw bathtub. The very fine quality linen on the bed was the best you can get. The room led out onto a large balcony where we spent an evening looking out over the gardens, at passing bats, the stars and sipping our wine. The large house is really a gem with fine wooden floors and the interior full of style and collected antiques. We spend a lovely afternoon chatting with Elizabeth while having high tea. The morning, after a sumptuous breakfast with self-made jams, Robin came home from travelling and enthusiastically showed us his collection of old musical instruments and tools, and then showed us around the wedding hall and his restored antique vehicles. Would truly have loved to stay longer at this fantastic B&B!!

This is probably the best B&B I have stayed in in NZ. Do not be put off by the long driveway without signposts. At the end of it is a magnificent house tucked out of the way surrounded by a lovely garden. A miniature kiwi Downton Abbey.

Hosts are a very nice couple.

    Breakfast spectacular.

We chose to stay with Robin and Elizabeth after reading their excellent reviews on Tripadvisor. However nothing could have prepared us for this remarkable establishment. The house is a fabulous piece of New Zealand's architectural heritage and it is maintained in great style. The decor and furnishings would not be out of place in one of Britain's National Trust properties. Our bedroom was enormous and very comfortable. In the morning we were served a superb and substantial breakfast. Elizabeth made us feel very welcome and Robin is a fascinating host. We both wished that we could have stayed longer than our fleeting overnight booking.

We thoroughly enjoyed our short stay at Llandaff, a 19th century country house filled with period antiques. Robin and Elizabeth were gracious hosts, taking time out of a busy afternoon to serve tea and chat with us about the house, its furnishings, and other interesting things about the area. The cooked breakfast was wonderful. A walk around the grounds is very enjoyable.
Llandaff in Masterton is a good stopping off point between Hawkes Bay and Wellington and close to the wineries in the Martinborough area.
