A pleasant discovery, and an interesting cave, well worth the short walk in town to it. Read all about the history of Muriwai a Maori princess on the plaque.
Part of the history of the Mataatua Iwi - they have the Lady on The Rock, The Waka, the Marae (and the House that came home), and Muriwai's Cave among others. The cave has an interesting entrance and especially good are the tree roots forming patterns on the surrounding cliffs. The cave isn't that deep (evidently it was deeper at one stage - but the story is interesting and some of the carvings are worth a second look. No cost and easy to get to - definitely worth a visit
