A wonderful hidden gem of a place!

5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 26 Jul 2017via mobile
We arrived late into Wijk aan Zee, a quiet, out of the way, seaside town on the Dutch coast.
It was lovely and peaceful and the hotel is practically on the beach! We arrived too late to catch the restaurant but the wonderfully lovely staff prepared us a simple meal of fresh bread and Dutch cheese with some bar snacks and a few beers. Suffice to say, this went down very well for our hungry travelling coupe! A lot of places would not go to this extra length! The staff didn't have to do what they did but they made sure that we got fed something and actually, it was really, really nice!
We then had a wonderful evening chatting with the night porter, who amongst other things, introduced us to an amazing App called Vessel Finder! Yes, we're all geeks! Haha! But the conversation was great and Rudi (I'm not sure if that is spelled correctly! Apologies if not!) really made us feel welcome. The rooms were very spacious and comfortable with big windows that you can open right up to let the air in. I had one of my best night's sleep there. So a big thank you to everyone there but especially to Rudi, a very lovely, charming and wonderful human being. I hope I can return in the near future!

Stayed here on business as its very close to one of the largest steel works in Europe. Having said that its location is very good and as long as you are not on a high floor you just would not notice the industrialisation. Minutes from the beach and a couple of minutes to town makes it very convenient. The room was huge and with some basic kitchen facilities such as a hob and fridge complete with plates and other essentials. The bar area is really good and relaxing with a nice outside space. I didn't have dinner but the breakfast was very nice. For a business trip to the Ijmuiden steel plant it is more than acceptable and convenient yet a world away from the works.

Wijk aan Zee is a very cosy town near the beach of North Holland. it is easy to reach from Amsterdam, Schiphol or Haarlem . and it is very quiet, if you like to get some fresh air by a walk along the beach. The Zeeduin hotel and restaurant is excellent quality with pleasant staff, sufficient parking, good restaurant and reasonable choice of wines. The breakfast is good with plenty of choices. Me and my partner had a pleasant

Room tip: first floor or top floor rooms have a big balcony with view over the dunes/ beach

We stayed for 5 nights. Room was generous but bed was two singles pushed together, which was a bit disconcerting. Comfortable enough though. Staff were pleasant and friendly and helpful. Restaurant is quite good and reasonable value. Location is a couple of hundred metres from the bus stop (comes every half hour from Beverwijk Railway Station, which is about 15 minutes away) and there is good carparking at the rear of the hotel.
The hotel is the last on the road onto the beach, which means that it can be a bit noisy with wind sometimes but that is far better than traffic noise. The hotel is on its own right in the dunes so it's surprisingly remote for such a crowded place as The Netherlands. Walk 100 metres onto the beach and there is 2 kms of wide empty spaces (once the portable day shacks have been removed at the end of summer) all the way down to Ijmuiden and the Tata Steel Works.
We enjoyed our stay in Wijk an Zee, so different from the central high rise hotels we stayed in elsewhere during our Netherlands holiday.
Overall, a bit pricey and a bit tired as others have noted but the location is unique and if you want to 'get away from it all' you will enjoy the village atmosphere of Wijk an Zee.

Room tip: Sea views are best but wind noise will be a factor

I stay regularly at this hotel for work, but also enjoy the location in the sand dunes and close to the beach for evening walks. The rooms are a good size, and the staff are friendly. Very good value for the price. The location can get noisy on stormy nights.

I've stayed here on a number of occasions (at least 6/7) but it just seems to be deteriorating.

It's always been basic, which you can accept as its good value for money, in a great location, with nice staff and a lovely restaurant, but the room wasn't very clean this time.

The bed was the strangest and seriously affected my sleep; it was two single bases pushed together, with mattresses that were at least 6 inches too wide for the base, but they had both the overlaps in the middle which meant that where the mattresses joined there were no bases underneath and I had to be careful not to fall between them!!! Very strange.

I liked the ground floor room and sat on the terrace taking in the late evening sun. Some of my furniture was pretty tired / stained. The tall lamp bulb had blown which meant that the room lighting was poor.

    Breakfast is pretty good too.

    The staff are very pleasant.
