Wanting an interesting outing on a rainy day when we were confined to our luxury accommodation we chose Rakinui. It is sufficiently removed from the centre of Tekapo to be quiet an relaxed.

We chose four starter dishes to graze from and they were superb. Dumplings, Pulled Pork Tacos, Lamb Spring Rolls and Salt & Pepper Squid was more than enough for the two of us. Even with two glasses of beer the bill was surprisingly modest..

We were staying elsewhere in Lake Tekapo and our first choice of restaurant (the number 1 on Tripadvisor) was full so we decided on this place for dinner. The waitress service wasn’t great, three times I had to tell them that I didn’t want water and our drinks were slow to come. However the food was pleasantly and surprisingly good. I had the smoked duck, which for me was over cooked, though if it was served to my wife she would have said that it was perfect. The duck croquette was especially good and the dish might have been improved if there had been two of them! It was also nicely presented. The main course was so good that I also decided to have the cheeseboard. I went for the small size and that was more than enough and very tasty. It was also very reasonably priced. One of the better meals we have had in NZ having been here 5 weeks.

We made a reservation at the restaurant for dinner. Food was good but we waited for quite a while after the starters. There were 8 of us. Our main courses were served at the same time. Good ambiance and a nice place to chat and catchup.

We had both dinner and then breakfast at this restaurant in Peppers Bluewater Resort. Reservations for dinner are essential and this will ensure that you get a table with a good view of the lake. Our Asian platter of dumplings, wontons, and egg roll was good and the high country salmon entree nicely prepared with bok choy and carrots. Since the resort caters to bus tours and other groups, the dining room can become noisy. This was particularly true at breakfast. Breakfast buffet had lots of options, but I felt the food was only average quality.

We decided to eat at Rakinui because we were staying at the Peppers Bluewater Resort and it looked like the best around. Lake Tekapo is not exactly a gastronomic center, so we had modest expectations. We were pleasantly surprised by the quality of the food and service. Our dinner dishes were very good and the view of the lake was very pleasant. Breakfast was another matter - all rather ordinary and not very interesting. Designed for the bus tour crowd. The resort does attract large bus groups, so you may be sharing the restaurant with big tables of lively travelers.
