“Almost heaven”

Maria Elena should be the Patrona del Turismo (Patron Saint of Tourism) for Bagni di Lucca! The apartment was perfection (a pellet stove to warm the stone walls on cold mornings); the added touches (lavender sachets from her garden, tucked into the towels); the setting a feast for the senses -- birdsong and church bells, roses and rosemary, honey and olive oil produced by Maria Elena herself, warm stone walls, terrace, and pathways in sunshine, and a view that takes your breath away and makes you feel you could reach out and touch heaven. Am I in love with Benabbio? Oh, yes!
But Maria Elena herself adds that extra touch, providing advice, directions, information, and tips. She even sought out a local artisan to make us souvenir spoons from olive wood, and twice turned up in Bagni di Lucca when I emailed in desperation with questions, leading us to the Info office and then the library, neither of which was open, much to her chagrin! She was so funny, and yet clearly frustrated that her guests were not able to receive the tourism info they needed in 'the big town'.

I must confess, though, there's a part of me that doesn't want anyone to know about Benabbio and surrounds. We see why the romantic poets (Byron, Shelly, the Brownings) made this their Italian home. We walked in wonder in the cobbled alleys of Assisi, marvelled at the canals of Venice, saw the ancient wonders of Rome, but we left our hearts in Benabbio.

“Heavenly!”

I have reviewed the delightful Olive Terrace before but , having stayed there last week, wanted to say again how special this place is. Maria Elena and her family are wonderful people, the apartment ( part of a lovely old house) is charming, the garden, right outside the door, is filled with bird song in the mornings but the best thing of all is the terrace . You can sit there for hours, looking over the village to the Apuan Alps beyond. A real sun trap too.
And now...Maria Elena has another Benabbio gem for rent! a little cottage ( chalet) at the top of the village along a path. The Chalet in the Forest. Perfect for those wanting peace and seclusion. We took a look and think it is charming.
We love Benabbio and cannot think of anywhere nice to stay than Maria Elena's Olive Terrace. The pizzeria ( 5 minutes walk) is great and the tagliatelle al fungi at the restaurant by the church, available at lunchtimes, is one of my favourite italian meals ever!

“Character 16th century villa with a beautiful terrace and a great view.”

When you have seen one crowded Tuscan town too many, the small quaint town of Benabbio, high in the hills, is the perfect place to get away from it all and the Olive Terrace is the perfect place to stay. A character XVI century villa that has been renovated without losing any of its old world charm. The best part is a large terrace, surrounded by olive trees, that overlooks the town and the surrounding countryside. Friendly Maria Elena, who owns the Olive Terrace, lives next door and is readily available to answer any questions you may have. Benabbio is within easy driving distance of several of the popular Tuscan hill towns and can be used as a base.

Our only regret was not having planned to spend more time here.

“Peace, quiet and stunning views - this is real italy”

My wife and I stayed at the Olive Terrace for just over a week in November. Maria was the most welcoming and catering of hosts - offering us lifts to the local rail station and giving us homemade jam upon arrival.

The accommodation was perfect - equipped kitchen, living areas and the most comfortable of beds. Very large for just the two of us - it was perfect. The views are stunning.

I would highly reccomend anyone to make their next holiday at The Olive Terrace in Benabbio. You will not regret it!

“Just Beautiful!”
Reviewed 7 July 2015 for a stay in June 2015

Beautiful and peaceful place. Our minds were blown away by the beauty of this village and its people. Special thanks to Ma. Elena she is a wonderful host very caring and helpful. She is also an agriculturist and bee expert and we learned so much from her. Too many good memories!
