It’s a fun day. Steven and Robyn have this activity down to a fine art. The task of forging a blade, shaping it, fitting a handle and polishing the steel takes place over a day. You are busy and do everything yourself, but Steven tidies up the worst of any errors you make. While he does, you have time for the tasty lunch and the famous big swing.

One limitation is that there is limited option for creativity, other than final blade profile. That’s not a criticism - there wouldn’t be time for everyone to make something really different. They all have to be nearly identical with the time available.

What. A. Great. Experience.

We booked knifemaking the day before on a whim while driving down the West Coast. Holy crap, this ended up being one of the highlights of our trip.

We spent the day with Stephen and Robyn, along with 10 other guests, making our own knives. The process is a well oiled machine (not literally), as Robyn and Stephen handled our group with ease. It never felt like you were alone in crafting the knives, they were always watching and helping and guiding us along. Everything was so accessible and unpretentious.

This was a great way to meet other travelers too -- you are with your group for about 8 hours, so it's nice to shoot the breeze with fellow knife makers. There are activities on the property, too, to help pass the time: knife throwing, horseshoes, a giant swing, sassy birds, some ducks, a cute doggo, it's great.

You're able to make the knife your own by customizing the blade, handle length, etc, and Robyn and Stephen help get it there. So you don't have to make a dagger or something really sharp, you do you!

MORE WOMEN SHOULD DO THIS ACTIVITY! We had a very male-heavy group, many of whom said their partners/spouses opted out, but ladies, this was a super fun activity and I left with a knife I feel really good about.

I’d heard many good things about this place so decided to take dad as a birthday gift. They’ve reportedly made 25,000 knives and it’s no surprise with the interesting and entertaining day offered. The day flew by, we had a lot of fun and we walked away with a quality knife that we’d be happy to have held up in court (a running line throughout the day from host Steve!). A really interesting and informative day with plenty of help that anyone would enjoy. Lunch was great too.
Very highly recommended!!

My 17 year old boy had picked this activity out as “his choice” for our trip back to NZ.
What a gem!
Stop thinking about it and just book a day with Robyn and Steve, two of the nicest, down-to-earth people you will find. Making a knife is a real bonus. The day was just fantastic.
Thanks so much for inviting us into your home from Ethan and Nathan (Tasmania)
