Owner description: the Boatshed Kayaks, was set up by Richard Clark in 2000, on his property on the edge of Lake Karapiro. We offer a number of different kayaking and stand up paddle board options from our great waterfalls trip to our evening glow worm experience, just flick through our website to get a better idea for whats available. Lake Karapiro offers an exellent venue with sheltered waters and 15 km of lake to explore. making it a safe and beautiful environment to try something new. our guides and instructors are fully qualified in both flat water and graded river paddleing so if your wanting to explore some of the lower sections of the waikato river between cambridge and hamilton youll be in safe hands. The Boatshed kayaks is also involved in multisport training and hire and has been training grade 2 paddlers for over 8 years, with a huge number of paddlers experiencing their introduction to kayaking through The Boatshed. The ethos at the Boatshed has always been on getting people out there paddling, young and old, and therefore growing kayaking as a sport or recreational activity.

A great half day outing! We had picked a hot day for it and it was lovely and cool around the waterfalls. With only a small amount of experience I was unsure how it would go, but with Richard's instructions I was soon at ease and thoroughly enjoyed myself. I would definitely recommend taking a camera in a waterproof pouch to capture the flora, fauna and birdlife.

We did the glowworm evening Kayak trip. A little more information on the website about clothing and shoes would have been helpful. But apart from that the organisation for the trip was fine. Timing is dependent on sunset, so we had quite a wait before we set off in the Kayaks.
I haven't done much kayaking at all, so I was a little worried about fitness, but it wasn't a problem, you can go at your own pace, and the guides keep a close eye on you.
Very picturesque paddle down a tributary of the river and then we all offload and have wine (or hot chocolate), crackers and cheese while we wait for the sun to go down and the glow worms to come out.
We weren't disappointed, the trip back was stunning, the glow worms were out in force.
A great trip, well worth doing.

We did the glowworm kayak trip. The guides were proficient and friendly. They gave excellent instructions on the best way to kayak. The kayaks were good and the guides made sure that they were set up to suit us.

We paddled roughly half an hour up stream and then stopped on the side of the river for a little wine, cheese and crackers. The trip back down the river through the gorge full of glowworms was nothing short of magic. It was like the Milkyway had come down to earth.

My teenage daughters and I had a wonderful night kayak trip to see the glow worms at karapiro!! The two young tour guides were professional and entertaining. Definitely a must do for anyone travelling in the area. It's a fabulous chance to see the beauty of kiwi bush!!

Did the '3 hour' gloworm kayak tour and thoroughly enjoyed it, however were a little disappointed we didn't do more paddling through NZ scenery or perhaps even a little more around Lake Karapiro as it was very much in the boats, paddle up stream, have drink, drift back down. In saying that, the gloworms were stunning and the guides brilliant so would recommend highly, just don't expect 3 or even 2 hours on the water.
