What a great adventure. Kids (9 & 10 yrs old) were excited and this did not disappoint. Really was an adventure to take them out of their comfort zone and let them feel the pride of accomplishing a huge feat. The children were confident to begin with, while walking through the cave they got scared, but pushed through to complete the task and have not stopped talking about it. I am so pleased I made the decision to explore this cave with them. From the time we arrived it was a great experience. The cafe was warm and clean with the theme emphasised with Troll feet biscuits to buy. Peter in the cave, instructing our mission was so patient and friendly. The cave itself held some wonderful exhibits and the childrens imagination was put to the test. Getting photos sent the next day was exciting as well. A must do when in Waitomo, especially with kids. Thanks Waitomo Adventures.
Thank YOU very much for your encouraging review !
We wanted this adventure to be an empowering experience for kids - where participants "feel the fear" but take on the challenge regardless. After all, isn't that what life's all about?
Bear in mind that the "fear factor" can be wound up or down to tailor the effects for the group doing it.
We can do this because when your family books on they're going to be the only ones on the trip.
Having said that, we're also now developing an adult version, which will be completely "off the chain"...watch this space.
So well done you Troll Patrollers and we'll keep those "Troll Foot" cookies coming.
Went for husbands 50th birthday. Deni was our guide and we had the best experience. Not only was she knowledgeable but she ensured we got the absolute best experience of climbing, swimming, floating and seeing the glow worms. Nice touch of getting our photos within 24 hours and at no extra cost. Would recommend this to anyone.
Abseiling isn't new to me, as I frequently rock climb however it was my partner's first time abseiling (and at 100m at that!). Despite having a fear of height, she absolutely crushed it. In the beginning there was a lot of hesitance but our guide Brad and Garrett were very encouraging, attentive and made us felt safe throughout the whole trip. There were times through our cave walk when my partner felt tired, and Brad quickly picked up on that and had the group stop to see the view around us. I enjoyed our conversations with both our guides in regards to more of the caving, rescue, and safety technicalities.
It truly is a privilege to traverse through the beautiful cave system, particularly the luscious cave plants and cave formations. I enjoyed having the glowworm viewing nearing the end of the trip, it was as if a chance to reflect on our journey and really just a great conclusion to the trip.
The 2 other folks that went down with us brought their phone even though the guide repeatedly told them not to. This became quite the nuisance as they ended up holding us back. Moreover it just ruins the atmosphere, and the immersive experience. Brad handled it very well, and had them lead the journey instead of us. So to friends reading this: please respect your guides. The rules they give you is to ensure we have the best experience, and a sustainable tour by minimizing our harm to the caves.
The cave is certainly beautiful but the trip wouldn't be anywhere as perfect if it wasn't for our guides Brad and Garrett who made the experience one of a kind. Follow the rules, respect the guides, don't be that guy.
Tips: definitely wear wool hiking socks to keep warm, your hands will get cold but the adrenalin keeps you warm (we went in winter)
This experience needs its own listing as it's so good.
Did it with a couple of 16yos for a laugh and we really enjoyed it. Superb value for money (quite a few unadvertised extras), fantastic, friendly staff and plenty of things to make you jump and keep you engaged and thinking. Think tame escape room crossed with very cool Halloween maze.
Younger kids would love it even more than we did and the fun starts on the short walk up to the troll cave.
To cap it all off the cafe is fantastic with incredible food made on the premises.
Did the Troll Cave with the kids. Fantastic, the kids loved it! Peter, the troll keeper made the the experience really awesome. If you have kids and want a good kiwi experience in Waitomo then do this!
We’ve just returned from the 4 hour lost world trip and what an incredible experience it was! We’ve been travelling around the world for the past 4 months and this is easily the best tour we’ve done. We were lucky enough that it was only us and our tour guide Iain, who was also awesome. We both get a bit nervous with heights, but Iain put us totally at ease- a fear of heights should not stop you from going on this trip! We can’t wait to see the photos Iain took!
