Comfortable stay

4.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 17 Apr 2019
We stayed 2 nights as part of a cycling event during April. The units were older A frame buildings but warm, had decent amenities and could accommodate several people upstairs in the mezzanine level as well as a couple downstairs although there were only the two of us. Big bonus, the supermarket was around the corner. Short walk to the main shops.

The receptionist was lovely and the room was very centrally located. There was nothing that was much else to like. Useful for the supermarket and town if you like being surrounded by cars, people, noise and exhaust fumes.

When you emptied the sink after washing up, the water and respective food waste bubbled up into the bath - needing cleaning out.
Poor cleanliness -carpet, settee and bedding cover were horrible, stained and dirty. You wouldn't walk bare foot on the carpet, it was threadbare and the settee was stained with who knows what. Uncomfotable cheap mattress. One electric ring which didn't get to temperature, little of no crockery or cutlery.
The fridge ice box door was missing, wouldn't make ice and leaked water into the rest of the fridge - which also wouldn't get up to temperature. It was tiny and the 'kitchennette' too small to be even classed as that.
The room smelt.
The patio was on the road with only a gappy bush in the way. The door was difficult to shut and lock - a temporary bolt was fitted to the top.
The appartment creaked and cracked making sleeping difficult. It was a noisy and polluted location.

The welcome the visitor gets in New Zealand is usually exceptional. People are smiley, friendly, interested. Which perhaps makes it a bit unfair marking a place down when this very high standard isn't reached. The reception person, relative to other places we stayed, was a little off-hand (this is just a job, it's not particularly interesting). The accommodation is a little tired, and the outside space for the ground floor rooms backs on to a road (with a thin hedge boundary). Reasonably priced, reasonably comfortable- but other places had set the bar too high!

Room tip: Upstairs is best.

I stayed in the King's suite. The price was honest, the location fine and the room comfortable and spacious. The only drawback was the creaking sound of woodplanks as they shifted. The building is made of wood, which is rather cool but it did wake me up as it readjusted at night.

The motel is located near the city and next to the grocery supermarket open till 9pm. Free car park available.
I had an upstairs room for 130 NZ$. Excellent facilities (tea, coffee, etc). The bed was comfy and the room was equipped with a sofa :-)

Location of the motel was great, right in town and next to town center. Supermarket was right behind the motel. However, there was no laundry, and motel reception operating hours were quite limited. But the biggest bugbear was the frequent creaking sound from the timber/wood that the motel was constructed from - it may be a problem for light sleepers.
