Recommended by locals we started our day with an excellent breakfast, we sat in the sun opposite the lake with an excellent coffee and very quickly our breakfast arrived, tasty hot and beautifully cooked. very reasonable price.

At the end of a long work day travelling from Dunedin to Wanaka we were keen for a decent, quickish feed.

A couple of early choices were shut - 8pm Dunday- but the Big Fig was open. The sign outside promised ‘slow food served quick’ so we opted to give it a go.

Three plate size options meant that all appetite sizes are catered for. Three meat choices plus a wide array of accompaniments gave us all a good plateful.

However the meat was rather dry and while the accompanying items were ok it all had a feel of having been under the heat lamps for too long. Perhaps timing is everything but late Sunday was not the best choice.

After reading so many positive reviews, we called in one afternoon for some meals to take back for dinner. That was our mistake as most dishes in the bain-marie were nearing empty and also a little dried out. Best to come early at beginning of trading times for lunch or dinner for takeaway to ensure meals are fresh and haven't been sitting for too long. Meals were reasonable but not at their best.

Not our normal sort of eatery but was delighted to come across this little gem.
We had the $10 serve for dinner. You get to select your own and they serve. The beef cheek, the mea5 balls and also the roast lamb were amazing. So much so we came back the next day.
Casual dining at its best.

Delicious food and good service in a casual and obviously popular cafe on lakefront Wanaka. The slow cooked lamb and salads were both super tasty and portions sizes were good. Will be back when next in town.
