Fantastic food, service, local wine and very welcoming and friendly staff. Great Lake views and 1 min walk from lake wanaka. Perfect place to eat after a day skiing. They also have a take out/take away available if you are wanting to eat your dinner on the lake front.

Yes, such a meal does exist! You can either eat in or take away.
You buy a number of units of food and then pick from the cabinet what you what. This is geared really well for those needing a gluten free diet. Also lots of choices for dairy and soy free diets too. Well priced and very tasty.
Staff were helpful and knowledgable.
New eaterie, has been completely refurbished. Licensed too.
We went in the evening when the food comes out from 5.30pm. First come, first served for the odd dish but others are replenished throughout the evening.

On a shortish trip to Wanaka, we happened to find a free table in the Big Fig when the other places we tried were all full.
Because I didn't get to visit the other places (that were all full), I cannot say whether Big Fig is similar, better or worse than its Wanaka competitors.
However, they are about the same as most of the average places we've visited in Auckland, so I rate them average because of that.

A good concept, "Slow Food Served Fast" and despite arriving late after the movies and the choice being more limited (as closing time was approaching), we still had a very good and reasonably priced meal.

Tasty meatballs of two varieties and some rotisserie chicken with very fresh and appetising salads.

Spoke to the friendly staff and they have only been going seven or so weeks and if early impressions are anything to go by, they could do very well.

Highly recommended

Stopped in for morning tea and it was outstanding. Coffee was excellent and slices delicious (make sure you try the Flourless Persian Cake). Everything was so good that we returned for lunch and we were just as impressed. A really different concept for lunch which makes a pleasant change from the usual sandwiches, panini etc. Service was great and we just could not fault it.
