Dated and overall let down

2.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 28 Sept 2023
After staying at a 'cheaper' resort prior to arriving at the Shangri-La, we had high expectations that the end of our time in Fiji was going to be great. We arrived too early, which was our mistake and had to wait for 3pm before being allowed into our room. The restaurants were happy to accommodate us and still charge the meals to our room, despite not being checked-in, which was nice. The location is great, being so close the beach all the time and lots of space for the kids to run around but unfortunately, that was the highlight. The room was extremely dated with downlights falling out of their sockets, a bar fridge that didn't work and no mini bar offerings. We were greeted with a bathroom complete with squashed bugs above the cabinetry with blood running down the wall. The air-conditioner was 'locked' and only allowed limited functionality. The staff (definitely not all of them but unfortunately majority) were nowhere near as friendly and welcoming as the previous resort. Some even decided to be overly sarcastic about the restaurant being under renovations and with much sarcasm telling us"it's never re-opening". All the food at the restaurants was very nice but again, the service was very sub-par, consistently asking for things and not receiving them without having to ask a second time.
All in all, it was a great location but lacked the polished service and cleanliness you would expect at the rate that was bring paid.

This was our third time staying at the Shangri-La and once again we were not disappointed.
We had read reviews about some rooms being mouldy etc. but this was definitely not the case with our room which was very clean and well looked after. The staff are really friendly and always go out of their way to say Bula and help you out if needed. Our check in was smooth and our room was ready on arrival.
As for the resort itself, the beach is paradise and all the pools are great! There are loads of fun activities organised for the kids and our kids (5 and 7) didn’t go to kids club as there was too much other stuff to entertain them. Our kids loved the inflatables at the beach in particular but also loved riding bikes, playing mini golf, playing soccer, softball and touch footy, pool games, snorkeling and parasailing. There is also plenty to do for adults including walking, gym, tennis, massage, jet skiing and golf. We stayed here 6 nights and put simply we never were looking for things to do!
The restaurants are all good except they are all very expensive (more expensive than restaurants in Australia) and many times we ate outside of the resort to reduce costs. A big inconvenience was the lack of laundry facilities which made washing clothes very difficult. The resort charge $35FJ for 20 items which is ridiculously expensive so we took our laundry outside the resort to get washed for much cheaper but obviously this was inconvenient. Surely some washers and dryers could be put in a room somewhere for guests to use.
After staying here we stayed at Port Denerau and can honestly say staying on the Coral Coast is far better and a more Fijian experience.
Overall we loved our stay here and look forward to visiting again soon!

This was our third time here although it’s been a long time and previously with our 2 boys when they were younger. This time it was for a wedding. I was a bit worried reading reviews to be fair. However I didn’t see or experience any issues at all. Yes it needs some refurbishing or repairs and they have started on areas, but nothing is awful. Our room was clean and spacious and comfortable and everything was in working order. The restaurants were all great and we especially enjoyed the adults only breakfast held in Black Marlin bar at present. The staff were all friendly and very helpful and soon learned exactly what we liked I.e. coffees, tea etc each morning. It’s easy to get to Sigatoka town which is worth a look, walk around. Eco Trax is nearby too which was an amazing experience, highly recommend but make sure you book. I can absolutely recommend Shangri-la but yes it’s definitely more suited to families.

Had a wonderful 8 days at Shangri-La, Fiji. We had been there twice previously, but this holiday was by far the best.
We stayed in a Reef Delux room, which was great. It was spacious and well designed with a separate bathroom which had both a bath and a shower ((not over the bath).
The Reef wing is "adult only ", so the pool and restaurant located right at the Reef wing, were both adult only. We also had access to adult only restaurants for breakfast and dinner. While we love children I must admit it was very relaxing and peaceful to dine without them.
Staff in all areas were wonderful....friendly, helpful and thoughtful. They all remembered our names.

Room tip: Plenty of walks round the beautifully maintained 105 acre property. A good gym and kayaks were used by my husband.

We had an incredible stay at Shangri La.

The highlight was the Village Tour with Moses who in an excellent tour guide and senior staff member at the Shangri La Yanuca Island Resort. Moses makes sure all the visitors are well fed and that the kids are happy so they are engaged and part of the tour. 5 stars to Moses who we remember from our last visit to the Shangri La when he took the kids for crab racing, feeding the fishies and the pool games. What a legend and he represents the whole team at the Shangri La who do their best to make your stay luxurious and relaxing.

Thank you Moses and the team at the Shangri La, Yanuca Island resort! 5/5

We booked our family holiday after having the most amazing experience in Bali and we were left rather shocked by the poor service we received at what they called a 5-star hotel.
My daughter has various food allergies, one of them being allergy to wheat. We found it very difficult to order food for her as there were not that many GF options. Every time we asked staff to make her a meal we felt that it was a massive inconvenience for them to do it.

I also read reviews prior to going on our trip and heard of the "Island time" and I can tell you that on average you will be waiting 1-2 hours for your food and 30min+ for your drinks (unless you go to the buffet restaurant).

The rooms do have a funny smell and they are an ok size (not too small but not too big). On our first day the towels in our bathroom looked so old with holes in it. I called reception and after that they provided us with nice fresh towels and linen every day.

We booked the all-inclusive package which was very confusing at the beginning because we were told that you have an allowance every day. Breakfast was included but as a couple for lunch and dinner, we could only spend 228 Fijian dollars per day (kids eat for free). Seems like a generous allowance but the food is very expensive in the resort. Any drinks before 12 are not included so be ready to pay for your morning coffee.

The beach is beautiful and we did snorkeling every day and could see a lot of different types of fish but that was the highlight of our trip.

Overall we were very disappointed with our stay at Shangri-La. You will not be getting a good value for money if you go here. If you do not have the food and drinks package be prepared to pay an absolute premium for all your meals. The wait for the food was just too long and traveling with a toddler you just can not wait 1-2 hours for food.
The customer service was not great and people were not that friendly.

Thank you to share your review on resort with product and services. It is very disappointing to hear you had been inconvenienced your stay with us.

We take each guest review seriously towards improvement and implementation of product & services to avoid further guests repeated of issues which has been mentioned.

For the food allergy our resort looks after each guest who has allergy very carefully once this has been communicated with resort and chef's. We do have meetings where any guest who has special dietary requirement our all chef's are being briefed to look after them in all outlets, only part of our guest is to identify to the waitress by telling them they have allergy issues and need to see chef for food option.
