We ( family – me + wife + 12 years old son) visited Ma&Ma Grand Hotel in July 2018.
As they want to be a Grand Hotel (which means with international clientele) the staff should speak Italian as motherlanguage and for sure at least English – the receptionists are speaking very well (we had Olga who was really perfect) English – only some waiters in restaurant are poor in English which sometimes lead to problems.
The pick up at airport was perfect and the driver brought us via ferry to the hotel. The 220€ fee for this one-way ride incl. ferry fee seemed a little bit over-priced.
The check-in was easy and quickly done.
Our sea-view appartment was clean ,,, but really small. The parents bedroom had a queen-sized bed which nearly filled the room and had approx 12m² (see attached picture) ,, the living-room had a sleeping-sofa which the housekeeping prepared as a bed and kept it for the whole week as bed even we asked them to rework to sofa in the morning because there have been no other possible sits in the appartment – the sleeping sofa nearly filled the room – this room was approx 15m² (see attached picture) so the only way to sit was outside at the terasse (what was nice) – with sea view (see attached picture) ,,, but the most we saw were the other buildings left and right and only a small detail from the sea ,,,
Free WiFi in room was announced and promised during check-in but in real not available (or always on-off). We asked the receptionists for a fix as we have to work between on emails and conf.-calls ,,, but within the week we stayed here nothing really important happend (in room was more or less unavailable and on terrace sometimes very slowly - they said the company is working on this - so we had to use the WiFi from the pool-side or from the lobby which was working but was difficult as I had many conference-calls and many people on deck-chairs at the pool.
They not gave any free complimentary drinking-water in the room ( what I expected in a 5* Grand Hotel and not take the tap water ) – so you have to buy it extra at the restaurant for restaurant prices (or rent a car and buy it in a supermarket in the city center) and they also not filled up the box with taps for clean face and ear (and I am not talking about one way toothbrush / toothpaste or one way shavers like I am used to in other 5* hotels).
Laundry-service is offered with pick-up until 9:30am and back same day until 8pm ,,, only it doesn’t work like this – laundry came back end of next day and after another 2 days one piece (which was missing and we have to talk to the reception 3 times).
Breakfast selection was ok ,,, only 2 fried eggs, sunny side down, welldone (what they didn’t understand) you have to order extra and you have to pay 5€ - I never saw this in a 5* hotel – so I really missed the real-cooking egg-station from other 5* hotels I visited. One day I ordered a Cappuccino (this is an Italian word) , asked twice for it and after half hour without service I went back to the appartment without.
The food in the pool-side restaurant was ok (the pizza at lunchtime was for sure deep-fried) and the waiters helpful and kind ,,, only again too expensive for what they offered (for the catch of the day (for 2 persons) they charged 100€) – the receptionist at check-in told me for dinner-time to wear long trousers and shoes (which was fine for me) but most of the guest came in shorts and slippy-shoes ,,,
The MaMaPizza offered mainly only pizza and salad (which was nice for my son) but nothing else (no pasta etc) but waiters very nice and kind and pizza very tasty.
So the overall voting is 3 stars because this resort is never a 5* - more a 3* - the price for my sea view appartment with not too much space, not good WiFi and limited view was 500€ per night incl. breakfast – over-priced.

Room Tip: sea view appartment

Great, great service all round. Arrived late no taxi in site. Called the hotel and one was arranged to collect us. Pleasant and warm welcome after 12.00pm. Staff at the desk super helpful all the time arranging last minute boat trips and early bicycle hire. Always with a smile and no hassle. Breakfast was busy but plentiful and very tasty with a varied selection.
Rooms where comfortable, spacious and well serviced down to a bathroom pack for him and her. Nice touch.
Good location across the road from a nice beach area and resturant.
But what made this special was that a mention of my wifes birthday resulted in a bottle of bubbly in the room and well wishes when we got in from a day out.
Plus there was a two hour wet spa included. Great relax that was.
Lovely stay thanks to all at Ma&MA

Room Tip: ground floor has a patio

Had a nice stay at this hotel but would not call it 5* luxury. The hotel is fairly large without large facilities to serve it. The breakfast room was always overly crowded, the pool and surrounding area were very small and the concierge was always very busy. Had to wait over an hour for bicycle hire. The hotel is located about 30 minutes walk from La Maddalena town and the mini bus service is not very frequent and gets filled up quickly. Whilst we had a enjoyable stay it was not the most relaxing or the luxury experience we were expecting.

This place bills itself as a five-star, luxury hotel. It even has the words embroidered on the bathmat. Not that there was a bath, just a shower. And there is the point for us. This is by no means a luxury hotel. It may tick the conventional industry boxes to get the star rating but there is more to five-star hospitality than filling in tick boxes, and Ma e Ma does not cut it overall.
Our seven-day stay had a bad start. Rooms are supposedly available at 2pm, which was roughly when we arrived, but ours was not. It will be only a few minutes, said reception. Why not go to the pool bar and have a snack and we will call you when it is ready? So we did and no they didn’t. We were still there at 3.30pm. Back to reception. It could be another hour, said the man on the desk, looking at his computer screen. No explanation. We told him we had pre-booked spa treatments for 4.30 and would need to shower and change. Shrugged shoulders and hand wringing. It may have done the trick though since we finally got the keys at 4pm but the whole episode left a nasty taste. No real apologies or ownership by the staff. No offer to pick up the pool bar tab for our inconvenience for instance.
The welcome on our bed when we finally got to our room spoke volumes – a typewritten letter on crested paper along with two pool towel tokens saying there would be a charge of 25 euros for each token not returned at the end of our stay. Does that tone sound like a “five-star luxury” hotel. Not in my book.
Then there was the room itself. It was very small. There was a large balcony - but no sunbeds, just two straight backed rattan-type chairs and no cushions. Cheap-looking furniture inside which looked like it might have come from a well-known Scandinavian chain store. Very little storage space – just a handful of small drawers - so most stuff had to remain unpacked in suitcases we were forced to leave cluttering the floor. Bare white floor tiles with not a bedside or area mat in sight. Five stars?
To be fair, there were positives. Some of the staff were great – Olga in the reception and Luigi at the pool bar for instance. The pool itself and the gardens, cleverly sitting in the rocky landscape, were attractive. The buffet breakfast - criticised by some others on Trip Advisor – was very varied and excellent all round though best enjoyed outside by the pool rather than in the sometimes noisy and slightly claustrophobic breakfast room. The free shuttle down to the port is a real benefit if you don’t rent a car, especially since, apparently, La Maddalena has only three taxis. After a bad start when our first order was forgotten, room service was excellent – both food and service. We used it twice when there were evening World Cup games we wanted to watch. The spa was excellent with good therapists and the prices reasonable. The fitness room was small though and had limited equipment considering the place has 90-plus rooms.
But five-star overall? No. Luxury? No. The accommodation certainly and, in patches, the staff did not live up to either standard.

While probably one of the better hotels on the island it most definately is not a 5 star luxury hotel. The staff is very friendly and helpful, but architecture and rooms is similar to a that of an American chain hotel. It also is outside of the centre of town and not on the beach. It however was fully booked and seems to be very popular.
