Afternoon Tea was well priced, plentful, and of very nice quality.
Our room was a bit quirky in having a split toilet and shower, sink across the entry.
Adequate room size for 2 Queen beds - which were super comfy.

Terrible stay in the motel wing of an "Historic Hotel". Our room had zero character. The woman who checked us in was beyond rude. View of a parking lot. 7:30am wake up by the 18 wheeler removing the dumpster under our hotel window. 8:30 wake up when the truck returned to put a fresh dumpster. 9:30 renovations begin with the crashing sounds of old hotel lamps and outdated furniture into the dumpster. Emailed Greg the hotel manager... crickets... they just don't care. Otherwise Newport was a spectacular destination!

Have been going to Newport for years but never stayed at The Viking. It’s just gone thru a major renovation- which on the main level of rooms is still in process and it’s messy. Lobby, lobby bar and restaurant- very pretty, but modern inside a historic hotel. Lobby bar tiny but nice. Restaurant very pretty- we ate breakfast and it was good. Has a nice outdoor seating area with fireplace and fire pits- you can eat out there, but there is no bar service in between food service. Rooms- re-done- decent, nice color scheme, bathroom was redone but so small we could sit on toilet put both legs in the shower and wash our hands in sink all at the same time.
Furniture- worn. Beds and linens- nice.
Older part of hotel with beautiful windows and ..... they are nailed shut!!! Rooms in “newer” wing have floor to ceiling windows and they don’t open either. No fresh air, no salt air smell! Hotel is in a classic Newport residential neighborhood but you can’t open your windows!! Crazy!!! Not even an inch or two.
Staff is super- friendly, accommodating, helpful.
Lots of weddings and conferences.
The hotel is about 3 blocks from the water and downtown Newport, on top of a hill. 3-4 blocks from Tennis and 3 blocks from downtown. Can walk to everything.
Overall- pricey for a gem of a historic landmark that’s been “whitewashed” cosmetically to appear updated instead of investing in the historic value and integrity of the building to bring it back to its original beauty. For the price next time we’ll go back to 41 North, The Grace Vanderbilt or even the Marriott.

Although the Viking is supposed to be the vaunted historic hotel in Newport, the owners have beat any shred of historic charm out of the place. So, if you’re thinking of staying here to bask in the Newport that was, you’ll be sorely disappointed. On the inside, it feels like any nicer Marriot or Sheraton conference hotel that could be anywhere. Don’t get me wrong. It’s perfectly nice and you’ll have a perfectly nice stay here but it’s soulless and corporate, not historic.

In fact, the main reason to stay here is because these days, it’s often cheaper than the other chain hotels in the area. Anything near the water or with a water view seems to be twice as much.

There are a few things to be aware of. The hotel charges an incredibly skanky $25 fee for internet use and having a mini fridge in your room. So, essentially, your room is $25 more than the stated price. Also, almost none of the rooms have any kind of view. Almost everyone looks out at a parking lot. So, it doesn’t feel romantic or scenic when you’re in the hotel, if that’s important to you. The bathroom layout is also a bit odd. Clearly, they took the original small sink out of the bathroom and put a large sink in what must have been a very large closet. The result is a toilet right next to the bathtub and a toilet paper holder on a far wall that you cant reach. Opposite that is a small room with a vanity on one side and a closet on the other. No bathrobe and very cheap pump dispensers of soap, shampoo and conditioner.

Basically, it’s a perfectly nice conference hotel at a decent price point for Newport. There’s nothing historic, scenic or romantic left at this place.

I was with a conference and was required to use this hotel to get the conference rate. After my stay, I would have used this hotel regardless. An amazing hotel with professional staff, modern amenities, and just a great overall experience. I hope to return to this hotel for leisure reasons.
