The dining room is small and is at the centre of the residential area next to the reception. The menu is also small but that seems a sensible strategy so as to focus on good quality. We ate here two nights and the food was first rate on both occasions. The first night we had the king salmon with wasabi dressing and the second night the lamb backstrap with garlic and thyme. The cooking was excellent as were the ingredients. We also had the Stone-ground dukkah and the fresh basil pesto as starters and the saucy chocolate pudding with cointreau. The wines were good quality and, for New Zealand, reasonably priced. The service is personable and polished. This restaurant is a fine example of focus and excellence and deserves top marks.

We stayed at this motel (Franz Josef Oasis) and decided to not venture into town but dine at this motel restaurant (The Gallery). This was a great decision. Our dinner was fabulous and the waitress was very friendly and professional. Our mains (both had the lamb backstrap) were cooked exactly as we each separately requested, and our complimentary vegetable sides were perfect. We had a nice pinot to accompany. Dessert (apple crumble) was excellent and our coffees very good. A wonderful and delicious meal.

My husband and I stayed 1 night at the Franz Josef oasis hotel and had dinner in the restaurant. It was wonderful. The staff was very nice and helpful. The food was super good! I heard the chef, she is a French cook that is why it is tastes good.
Every course was good. Check out the pictures.

My brother stayed in this motel for two nights and we joined him for the Xmas dinner which was very disappointing. My English husband has commented - it was the worst Xmas dinner he had in his life and all of us agreed.

We expected the food from a 4-star motel which would be better than the food we had on 25-Dec. We believe the standards of food from this motel which was worse ever.

Tasteless old Steak (Two were very bloody and one was over-cooked)

Tasteless old Lamb (all of the dishes were overlooked which were very tough and hard to chew)

Salmon steaks were not fresh and stink.

Pavlova were supplied from a cheap supermarket and those strawberries were very old (tasted like they have been cooked and left in the fridge for weeks).

Christmas cake was tough as well, as it was from supermarket again.

Chocolate puddings were not up to standards as well.

We only enjoyed the entrees which are tomato soup and bread.

The dinner costs us $967 which we believe this is over-priced and we did not enjoy it except for the tomato soup and the bread roll as our entree.

We also had dinner at Monsoon Bar and Restaurant (Rainforest Retreat Hotel) on Xmas Eve, and we paid less than $400 includes alcohols and beers for 14 people. We had another dinner in Queenstown which costs us $538. The food from both restaurants and bars were very nice and we enjoyed them very much. The standards of food there were very high. None of us had complained about anything but we really had a very bad experience from Franz Josef Oasis.

We emailed the owner about our experience and have been told that all of the food ingredients were the freshest which made us laughed.

This is a true story we had on our Xmas day in 2015 and we will never go back again!!

This place has a nice location and the restaurant and terrace are stylish.
It also has a captive audience from the hotel, of which it is part and with visitors to the gallery during the day.
However, you cannot serve steak as a main course with just a few sliced onions, with no sauce and not a single potato or vegetable for this price! If ever? Everything is extra!
We also had the 'chicken stir fry' which was the strangest that I have ever had! It was a 'casserole' of overcooked chicken in a mess of soft onions, gravy, cabbage and broccoli. No capsicums, no Chinese veg or spices, or anything crispy and it had never been anywhere near a Wok.
The service was excellent, but the food is a big letdown.
