Lovely place to stay

I don't think I've ever stayed somewhere that caters so well for different types of guests.

My wife, daughter and I stayed in a lodge and it was lovely. The lodges are far away from the dorms and bar where the backpackers hang out - and the walk through the forest makes them feel really private and secluded.

One problem we had on our trip in NZ was trying to get our toddler to have a shower (she's scared of them). Like most of the places we stayed in NZ, our room had no bath, just a (very nice) shower. However, lodge guests get free use of a private spa pool - problem solved!

Once our daughter had gone to bed we enjoyed a drink sitting outside on our private terrace. One tip for anyone thinking of doing the same though - make sure you cover up. There were plenty of mosquitos about after dark!

The large bay windows and skylight made the room bright and brought a bit of the forest indoors. But it would be good if they had blinds on them as it gets very bright once the sun comes up!

Booked by our agent, Room 201 was OK. It helped to be a corner room with windows on three sides. Not what I expected but we made it do for two nights. Large tour groups, hikers, RV's ...it's all here. Surprisingly quiet considering. Room is minimal, relatively clean but really worn. Staff was very nice and helpful. The WiFi connection is terrible. Five TV channels that work. Not my favorite stay so far but a good location in Franz Josef, within walking distance there are several places to eat. King Tiger for Asian and the Monsoon located on the property to name two.

The rooms was nice, with King bed, couch and refrigerator. The bathroom was very small and the Wifi service was bad- suitable for email, but not adequate for any web activity. Very large place, but despite the crowds is still pretty quiet. Restaurant offers bad food - easily the worst meal we have had in our eight days in NZ.

Booked a powered site for our motor home. Was happy with the toilets and facilities. The office staff were very helpful and the restaurant was excellent. Overall a lovely stop for our glacier visit. Would recommend Rainforest Retreat to others.

We stayed in a small rather thin walled, bare bones room. Our mattress was rather soft and the sleep wasn't great quality. For backpackers it has great facilities.. laundry, kitchen, restaurant and bar, spa and, a lounge with tv and internet. Perfect for young people travelling on the buses. Party atmosphere. Equipped with Dorm rooms and private rooms.

Stayed in the Gecko section as part of a tour group so can't speak to the other types of lodging on the very large property, but the rooms were clean and modern. Only issue was not having an outlet in the bathroom and no screens on the windows (bugs come in if you want to let fresh air in).

Had dinner and breakfast in the on site restaurant. The one vegetarian dinner main dish (grilled vegetable salad) is very tasty and the breakfast buffet is decent.

Two different self-service laundry locations (a main one with many machines and a satellite with only 2 but with a dryer that doesn't work) which was very helpful and inexpensive although all the dryers have very low heat so I recommend using the hottest heat setting no matter what type of clothes you're drying.
