Overpriced

3.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 16 Mar 2023
Nice enough hotel and glad we were lucky to have a view of the garden. Bit out of town and not really walkable. Breakfast was very basic and not much of it. All in all overpriced for what it was. Very clean though.

Nice setting, however the location is too far out of town. No air conditioning, no fly screens on windows and no insect spray! So unable to sleep with window open to get any airflow due to heaps of mosquitoes. The room was stuffy and suffocating as a result. Due to these issues we think the room is very overpriced.

Hi Adventurer, during very warm weather I would recommend a luxury room with air-conditioning, or open windows with no lights on, as sometimes midges are attracted to the lights. Luckily it gets dark very late in summer.
The location is a 5 k drive to the village, guests love the peaceful garden setting so most don't mind the 5 minute drive.
Thanks for staying with us.

I hoped this would be a fantastic experience to stay there and I was not disappointed.
The rooms are spacious and well maintained, very good stocked bathrooms with everything you need. The view is fantastic, but this is the first place where to look at the Hotel was even better!
Be aware, there is only a small, but delicious continental breakfast available and you have to drive to the restaurants in town (5min by car) for dinner. But that was not an issue for us at all.

Room tip: Only continental breakfast in Hotel, no restaurant in-house but 3-5 min away by car.

Generally speaking we were happy with our stay at this motel. Our room was immaculately clean and overlooked the lovely garden out the back of the property. However for the price I would have been unhappy if we’d got one of the front rooms overlooking the car park. The bed was very comfortable, although it got quite warm at night and with no air conditioning. There are no screens on the windows and no screen door so letting fresh air in is problematic unless you don’t mind the bugs. There was an electric fan provided. The provisions in the room were minimal for a self proclaimed boutique hotel. No robes, extra towels or bowls, spoons etc to enable you to eat breakfast in your room. There is a continental breakfast in the restaurant for $22. The motel is about 5kms from town so no walking to dinner, but that didn’t bother us. It was pleasant, if overpriced, but I think New Zealand overall has become more expensive trying to make up for two years of being locked off from the world.

Room tip: Ask for a garden view room

This was the most expensive place we stayed over an eight-day road trip on the South Island. It was the most disappointing in that the value for the rate wasn’t there. Only some rooms have AC (you have to ask), and when the clerk moved us from a king with fireplace to a king without fireplace but AC, he originally said the rate would be a bit lower, but then he said it was higher because of demand and that they were nearly sold out that night. He didn’t charge us extra, but we left before 7:30 and there were more than half unused rooms and only four other cars in the lot.

The main issue is that this was more expensive than super nice new places in Arrowtown and Dunedin but there was no kitchenette let alone a kitchen. Good thing I packed sporks so we could have granola and yogurt (having been warned by previous reviewers that the expensive breakfast was underwhelming). The bedside tables were a foot below the mattress, so that was awkward. The bath soap in the shower was the watery foam soap you get in public toilets. It was unsuitable for shaving. Would not recommend. We had to plan a last-minute south tour due to North Island flooding, so our options were limited.

Awful, just gross. The place was dirty - bugs and spiders. My wife swore she saw mouse droppings too. The management could not have cared less because we had already prepaid our stay. We swallowed the loss of our money and moved to the Aspen Court, which is a delight and soooooo clean. As we left, we noticed a “For Sale” on the corner of the property, which might explain the awful condition of the place and the management’s indifference. Stay anywhere else for the foreseeable future.

Room tip: Franz Josef has lots of delightful places to stay- this isn’t one of them

Hi Curious, this review is a complete mystery to us.... Your comments are not in keeping with our ratings. We have thorough cleaning schedules and regular preventative pest control, we have never seen droppings inside any of our buildings as they are well designed and maintained. We are located in a conservation area for predator-free 2050 with serious efforts to protect the native bird-life, which is flourishing, ( see info about ZIP: zero invasive predators ).
The management definitely care, so I can assure you that if you leave a message on the website, that the GM will reply personally and promptly to any comment or complaint or question. ( If you have already checked out, your are welcome to send a message.)
Our location is described as 5 minutes drive from the village, but maybe it was too quiet for you? Perhaps you wanted to be in the village itself? Perhaps you didn't agree with our cancellation policy? Maybe something else ?
