Magical views of Mt Cook and surrounding scenery.
Meals and coffee are good but a little more expensive.
But the view makes up for everything

We may have caught these ladies on a bad day but our experience at Matheson Cafe was beyond average. Firstly, the woman taking our order kept forgetting what we had said so we had to repeat the order a few times. By this stage there about 10 others in the line waiting and she then proceeded to stop and make our teas while everyone was waiting. There were other staff members who could have done this. They then stuffed up my order but brought my partner's food out while they fixed mine - another 20 mins. When my order came it was meant to come with a poached egg but it came with burnt scrambled eggs instead. I asked about this and the waitress said 'Oh you want a poached egg?' I said it was on the menu and she replied 'is it?'. Uhhh. I had seen two of my dish go out to tables and they looked lovely. Mine had been rushed and it was evident. Nice flavour and nice view but sadly, staff just off with the fairies. Definitely not a highlight.

Stopped in here before going to see the sunrise at Lake Matheson. The breakfast menu is a little bit light on, with not a lot of variety but the food was really nice and the service was really good. Since we got there early we were able to get a table close to the window so we could see the amazing morning views of the mountains. Another highlight were the cows in the paddocks right outside, they were very friendly and really placid. Best tip, go early for breakfast before heading out to the lookout.

The food here is better than average, although a bit pricey and with portion sizes on the small side by New Zealand standards. But what sets this restaurant apart is the spectacular views of Mt. Tasman and Mt. Cook that one can enjoy either sitting outdoors on the large patio or through a glass wall from the comfortable interior. Another feature is the highly original architecture of the building, with a soaring roofline that seems very much in keeping with the mountainous surroundings.

This restaurant deserves every single award displayed on their wall. It was thanks to our hotel manager's recommendation that we had dinner at Matheson Cafe. There is nothing "cafe" about this restaurant. Delicious food & outstanding service. I would highly recommend dining here.
