My friend and I were on a trip last week and were really disappointed.
Half of the time was spent in the visitor center and waiting to get a helicopter.
The helicopter does not fly over the glacier, so it is possible to see how big it is. The trip on the glacier only covered a small area of ice.

A big thank you to Beth, Steve and Tim who gave us a great experience on the Fox glacier. We did the "flying fox Heli Hike" and had an amazing time. I was a bit hesitant at first as it is not a cheap excursion but the value is excellent.
Ten minutes prior to the start of our tour we got the green light for weather. We got checked in and introduced to our equipment. Our family of four was seated in a helicopter and flew up to the glacier. There we were paired with some crampons, our guides and a few more travelers. We were trained efficiently how to walk on a glacier and got to it. I was amazed by how far we went on the ice, how much we got to see and do and how in depth the information was that our guides gave us. We learned a lot, had some good laughs, some exercise and saw some amazing sights. Our training got put to good use when the some cloud developed over the glacier and we had to hike to a secondary landing spot to be helicoptered out. We flew out to meet some more super friendly, happy staff and left tired and satisfied.
The trip was organized very professionally. I felt safe and comfortable but not "babied" They assume common sense and a general interest in what you are doing which I think is great.

I baulked at first at the cost of the ticket for the helihike... NZD$450! But consider that the glaciers are not only rare, but they are disappearing!! 20 years ago Fox Glacier was about 20km long and now it's only 5km.

So get in while you can for the rare views of ice caves and crevices. The guides are professionally trained for safety when boarding and leaving the helicopters. The helicopter ride itself has amazing scenery that you will never forget.

The guided walks do have ice caves and crevices you can crawl into.

We were fortunate because we were booked the day before at Franz Josef and it rained. We rang Fox Glacier and fortunately they had a midday helihike.

Everyone came away beaming.

So whilst I initially baulked at the price, my mentality changed by just budgeting for it. You only live once and the glaciers might not be around much longer.

Their pictures don't lie. This was totally fun and an amazing experience. Everything needed was supplied, even waterproof outer layers. Friendly and informative staff and guide. Really like the town of Fox where this heli hike is located. Franz Josef is very busy.
