We ummed and aghed over taking a helicopter flight up Fox Glacier as it is quite expensive... however as luck had it we got on an early morning 10 minute flight and WOW - best thing we did on the trip. You see so much more up there than you ever would from the ground and the team at Mountain Helicopters were super friendly. All round great experience.
I've listed it as one of my top 'to-dos' in the South Island on my blog:

There are a number of operators in the Franz / Fox area, we chose Mountain because they operate MD500s with a better viewing potential than the larger helos, and they were price competitive. We were fortunate with the weather and enjoyed fantastic viewing of the Fox Glacier and the alpine area through the main divide. Very informative commentary from Nathan, the pilot, and the landing on the snow looking across the Murchison Valley (I think) to Mt Cook and Mt Tasman was spectacular to say the least. Great experience, superb viewing from the MD500E, and the Mountain team made it a wonderful experience in a beautiful part of NZ!
Booked a flight for 1st thing in the morning only to be told the day before that no flights would go up till mid morning. Arrived at 9am after watching helicopters from other companies take to the skies on a beautiful clear morning only to be told that we would have to wait 90 mins for another couple to arrive from Franz Joseph. Staff seemed totally uninterested in taking to the skies at all. I would recommend that you should do as I did. FIND ANOTHER COMPANY for your flight
Not wanting an expensive helicopter ride my companions and I chose the shorter flight with Mountain Helicopters for what we felt was value for money. They were more accommodating than the others for just a trip to the Franz Joseph Glacier flyover. Our pilot gave us a great view over the top of the glacier with several orbits to get an overall view. The ground man was very efficient with his safety briefing and getting us on board the helicopter and back out again.
I took a 40 minute helicopter ride, the most expensive and longest that was offered. The ride was smooth and the views of the glaciers and mountains was great. The pilot was unintelligible due to his thick accent and quick speech and the static from the helicopter's electronic system. When I asked him to speak more slowly, he said that he was a pilot, not a guide. MY RECOMMENDATION: find another company and do the same type of tour.
We looked at all the companies offering helicopter flights in Fox and Franz Josef and decided on Mountain Helicopters because they are a locally owned company and they fly small helicopters that have an excellent safety record and good visibility for all passengers. We planned to be in glacier country for only two days and were not sure exactly when we would arrive, but Jessica had assured us in emails that we could just call on the day we wanted to fly. On the day we did arrive at the Mountain Helicopter office in Fox, rain threatened and visibility was variable, but Mike and his team managed to fit us into a short weather window and Mike himself took us on an exhilarating flight over both Fox and Franz Josef glaciers and also managed to land us on Middleton glacier for photos. We didn’t see Mount Cook because of the cloud cover, but that was a small price to pay for being able to take the flight at all. I’ve flown many times in larger helicopters, but flying in the small machine used by Mountain Helicopters was a much more exciting experience and the visibility so much better.
Thanks to Mike and his team for their friendly and personal service and, contrary to what the last reviewer intimated (how was that and the personal abuse allowed by TripAdvisor?), we think they are great at ‘transporting folk in helicopters’!
