Lake Rotoroa Lodge: the legacy of a gentleman's fishing lodge.

If you have been fortunate enough to experience the private fishing and hunting lodges founded around the world in late 19th and early 20th centuries, you will know what to expect when you visit the Lake Rotoroa Lodge. If you haven't had this experience, I recommend it enthusiastically. At LRL, you will be treated as a member of a club, not a passing traveler - warm, friendly service, excellent food, unobtrusive attention to your needs and interests. If you like to fish, you have some of the best NZ trout rivers to choose from and excellent guides. If not, Bill and Jenny can arrange almost any other activity you can imagine - I particularly recommend the hiking. The Lodge has been updated recently without losing its charm and "clubby" feel.

Many thanks-always easy with such nice guests. As I write, further renovations are taking place as we continue to enhance guest comforts. We look forward to next season with a further revamp of facilities.

A true icon that lives up to and beyond it's reputation...

Our expectations for LRL were very high and I'm pleased to be able to say that they were exceeded. You might think that with all of it's history dating back to 1920 the lodge might be excused for resting on it's laurels but the way Bill, Jenny and Alasdair treat their guests you'd think that the lodge was making it's very first impression. Everything is well thought out - the rooms, location, service - Bill and Jenny are wonderful hosts, and little touches like laundry facilities, top notch fishing gear and heated floors in the bathrooms leave you wanting for nothing. Alasdair's cooking would be considered exceptional in London, NYC or Paris - which just puts it over the moon for a fishing lodge in New Zealand - every meal - breakfast, lunch and dinner was simply spectacular. Thank you for a great trip!

Room tip: Try the New Zealand wines!

Lake Rotoroa Lodge, a very unique and special place

This was our 3rd visit to Lake Rotoroa Lodge and were we impressed (again)! The recent refurbishments are refreshing and Alister (the Chef) cooks a mean Salmon...Bill & Jenny attended to our every need, and some...they are brilliant! The whole place runs like clockwork, and we are already looking forward to visit number 4!

Room tip: Request a room facing the Lake, the view is breathtaking. Ask Alister to cook fish for you

Spectacular

Three nights at the lodge was a surprise birthday present for my husband. On arrival the scenery was spectacular, nestled by the lake and river with breathtaking views of the snow capped mountains.
We were the first guests of the season and we enjoyed the first stage of a total refurb. The eclectic mix of old and new was warm, inviting and set the mood for our stay.
Bill and Jenny were the perfect hosts, nothing was too hard. The food and service was fantastic thanks to chef Wayne and Debbie.
Fishing guide Richard was the best! My husband landed two spectacular brown trout 5.7lb and 4lb.

Thank you for the kind comments on the lodge and our new refurbishments. Stage 1 has added a completely new feeling of comfort and luxury to the lodge. The addition of the separate media room will be well received as a space for catching up on world news, watching movies or simply to relax and read a book. We also added under floor insulation for increased comfort.
Stage 2 will begin at the conclusion of this season and will feature a conservatory on the second level, a screened front porch and a stonework fire place. The lodge will also undergo a complete repaint.
We will put up photos once all the work is completed.

Fantastic Lodge

I recently accompanied my husband and son on a grand fly-fishing trip to Lake Rotoroa Lodge. It was a trip of a lifetime. The historic ambiance of the lodge was a nostalgic step back in time but with a luxurious touch. Bill and his wife Jenny and their staff were spectacular hosts and made us feel very welcome. Allistar, the chef, presented amazing meals. Our fishing guide, Richard, was fun-hearted, very talented and such a gentleman. The 4.5 to 6.5 lb. trout the boys caught were out of this world, as was the spectacular scenery along the way. Our rooms were beautifully appointed with stunning views of the lake. Sitting by a roaring fire with cocktails before dinner was the icing on the cake. We cherish our memories of our 4 fantastic days at the lodge and look forward to a return visit.
