Very imoressive engineering done on this water storage dam near Clyde in South Land New Zealand. Spectacular mountains and bare rock faces feed this dam. Lookout on the Southern side will make for good photo op.

Massive construction, well worth a visit. Went on a club outing and everybody enjoyed it.
It takes about 2 hours, but well worth the time. 38 of us.

Thenwater justbtravels for miles and then you see the dam, quite impressive, very large concrete structures sitting against the hill faces, looking very man made against the backdrop of the beautiful lake created by the dam itself.

Ok, the dam itself is not one of the smaller attractive power stations that dot many of the larger rivers of New Zealand. However, having taken the ride between Queenstown and Clyde, which skirts along Lake Dunstan, makes you curious about the dam itself, one of the largest in New Zealand. Perhaps what is more interesting is the fact that despite being opened in 1992 the amount of scarring of the surrounding hills to stabilize the terrain is still visible. In fact, there is one area in particular, where a significant slip threatened, and if it occurred the consequent lake tsunami would have overtoppled the dam itself and drastically threatened the township of Clyde. As for the dam itself, a short walk from Clyde provides pretty good views.
