We stopped by for coffee and cake after a hike. The waitress was excellent - very friendly and efficient. The cake ($12) was stale and not our idea of carrot cake. It was not moist and it did not have the expected soft cream cheese topping that all carrot cakes have. It came with whipped cream and a berry sauce. This combination was weird. The topping on the cake was solid like marzipan. We removed all of it. My siblings coffees were fine. My coffee (a soy flat white) was awful. I did not know that soy milk curdles but it does. My soy coffee was curdling. This cafe was such a disappointment. It is located at the Chateau Tongariro so we expected much more than this.

This, a bit tired looking large cafe, is located in the lower level of the Chateau Tongariro. We had dinner there twice so we feel comfortable in giving our review of this cafe. We highly recommend their burgers, fish of the day and we especially enjoyed their vegetarian pizza which was excellent. Although much of the menu is typical pub food they have several fancier options (likely from the formal restaurant upstairs) but we recommend that they be avoided. The service, provided by a young and well-trained staff, was excellent.

We decided on this place because we wanted the venison pie, which had got good reviews on tripadvisor. Sadly, even though it was on the online menu, it is no longer on the menu. Three people had the lamb, which they enjoyed, and I had a burger, which was pretty good. Quite expensive though.

Ate here while staying at the hotel. Nice change to the more formal dining room. Very small so bookings are essential. Good menu, lots of pub type choices. We had the burger and the venison pie both or which were fantastic. Good drinks list as well.
