Colleith Lodge was definitely a highlight on our trip to New Zealand! It was not what we were expecting but we were pleasantly surprised with the house, the view and the hosts!
The warm welcome we received from Helen and Wayne was only the beginning of their wonderful service they provided to us. We felt very spoiled every second we were at Colleith Lodge. We will be back!

It was such a pleasure to enjoy your company. We delighted in mother and daughter enjoying each other's company as you shared your first adventure together in New Zealand. Thanks for being terrific guests and we look forward to seeing you again.

Helen and Wayne could not have made us more welcome. The house is beautiful, the views amazing and the breakfasts all you could want - and organic fresh fruit from the garden is a real treat. Very comfortable bed, view from the room out to the Pacific, and a shower that stays at the temperature you want. The setting is gorgeous and the icing on the cake was hearing a kiwi in the early morning. We really didn't want to leave

Thank you for being our first guests when we took over the lodge. It was great to have you here and we thoroughly enjoyed your company. We're still jealous that you heard a kiwi and we missed it!

Helen is a retired adventure travel entrepreneur and CEO. Wayne is a retired film director who for 40 years produced adventure, cultural and travel films and documentaries, plus TV shows. They are new owners who are wonderful hosts with great knowledge of New Zealand and extraordinarily accommodating hosts. The Lodge has awesome views and very comfortable rooms. The cocktail hour has great apps with wonderful conversation which is a great way to relax at the end of a day of adventure in this great area of NZ. The breakfast with a great sunrise is very special also. We loved everything about our stay - Ron and Lucy Davis, Vail Colorado

Thank you Helen and Wayne for giving us the opportunity to stay in your stunning and beautiful home with the most breathtaking views we have had the luck to have found for 2 nights. Coupled with that was your amazingly friendly and welcoming personalities that made our stay here so good we will definitely want to come back. Thank you for your excellent advice on locations to visit around the area and your spot on food choice recommendations to eat out and of course your top notch in-house breakfast. Your local food, cheese and wine choice that you kindly offered to us each evening were delicious. My compliments to the chefs.

Room Tip: Uniqueness of this home is all rooms are with breathtaking views and all amenities that are needed and expected are given.

After reading reviews on TA we chose this three bedroomed boutique lodge for our last two nights in New Zealand, thinking we were spoiling ourselves.

Firstly the good points; views, adequate rooms, nice small garden, personal service, deck, pool and jacuzzi.

The weak points have mostly been mentioned by others; rooms not "suites" (as advertised), no a/c or ventilation so unbearably hot when we were there, awful coffee (in room and for breakfast), cooked breakfasts poorly done on both days, pool too shallow to swim a length, 30 min walk to restaurants, lack of privacy between rooms.

The awful bit, though, was Colin and Maureens' attitude to guests. Breakfast must be "between 8.00 and 8.30, but don't all arrive together." Room must be cleaned at 9.30 even if it means cleaning around guests, which it did! Jacuzzi "has not worked for months, since 3 guests broke it". Too hot in the room, "open a window and use insect repellent then". Swimming towels given very begrudgingly, and only on request. "Personalised itinerary for tomorrow" was, of course, just a standard list of nearby attractions. Two sunbeds between six guests. No surface anywhere for the in-room tea/coffee tray found on a low shelf in the bathroom. Uneaten "pillow" chocolate removed from bedside table during cleaning. Etc etc.

We did not wish to spoil our stay even more by raising these issues with Colin or Maureen. As people we got on very well with them, but as hosts they were poor, almost Fawlty Towers-like in truth.

At this price point is essential to provide guest-centred, empathetic, personal service. Colleith Lodge does not.

Travelling companions of the "Disappointing " in February!! Birds of a feather flock together. The four of you didn't enjoy it but 500 others have this season.
