We walked through the stone arch at low tide despite the fact that the Department of Conservation had it roped off. A local man later told us that we should 'stay to the right' or oceanside when walking through. Apparently the rocks always fall off on the hill side of the cave. Beautiful cove either way!

If you can spare the time and money, sea kayaking to Cathedral Cove is the way to go. We did the morning half day Cathedral Cove classic with the kids (6 and 8). The coastal scenery in the protected marine reserve is beautiful, and it is great to peacefully paddle to Cathedral Cove beach and the triangular rock from the sea.

Mike, our guide was friendly and knowledgable and adjusted the pace to the group. We were paired with a family with similar aged kids. The paddling was sometimes strenuous if you are in tandem with a young child, so it helps to be at least of average fitness. This was particularly the case a bit further out to sea around some rocks, where the current was stronger. However, we would stop for a talk about the area's history and geology, just when you felt you needed it. You don't need any previous experience kayaking, and instructions are provided at the start.

Once landed at Cathedral Cove, we were treated to a delicious hot chocolate or cappuccino and choc chip biscuits. We were then free to explore the beach and rocks, or go for a swim. You could walk through the arch to the adjacent Mares Leg Cove at your own risk, as it was roped off. The cove was worth seeing and is where the classic photos through the arch are taken. The kayaks have dry bags, so you can take non-waterproof cameras and towels. We returned to Hahei beach about 3.5 hours later, which just the right amount of time. A perfect day on the bay!

This place is worth the walk. In fact, the walk is an experience in itself. On one side you looming sandstone cliffs with aqua sea and the other is a countryside scene with green rolling hills dotted with flowers and shrubs. The energy once you are down the bottom is calm and inspiring. Next time I will definitely look into one of the boat trips that takes you to the off shore islands which can be viewed from the lookout above.

We had a tour with the guys that run Cathedral Cove Sea Kayaking - awesome experience! They picked us up from the ferry terminal from Whitianga. Due to the time of year (August) we had the beach completely to ourselves, the sun was shining and it was only our footprints in the sand - what more could you ask for!?
