Lovely stay, only marred by one small detail....

4.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 17 Nov 2024
Stayed midweek on a DBB in a standard Castle room. We parked directly outside the Castle building entrance, arriving a couple of hours before check-in time but were allowed to access our room straight away, nice touch as it meant we could dump our bags and go and explore the village (about 8 minutes walk away down the hill or take a buggy) Our room on the top floor was very spacious and appeared spotlessly clean until we noticed next morning some ingrained mould on the tiles surrounding the bath wasn't mould at all but dirt which was easily wiped away with a damp tissue, see pic. We brought this to the attention of the front desk manager who apologised profusely and hopefully the bath and surrounding tiles have been deep cleaned by now! If it hadn't been for this incident we would have rated this a 5 star stay.

Bed was comfy, room was quiet and we slept well. Could use the supplied hairdryer at the desk/mirror and we had a nice little kitchen area tucked away in the room. L'occitane toiletries supplied in the bathroom, bathrobes and slippers supplied and shower pressure was decent. We had dinner from the brasserie menu that night in the Castle, would suggest pre-booking a time for dinner as it was very popular. We had 3 courses (can choose anything from the menu) and the food was excellent, especially the prawn starter, lamb main and trio of desserts for pudding! Breakfast was served next morning down in the Portmeirion Hotel and a buggy took us down and brought us back. Again the food was excellent, especially the warm croissants, eggs benedict and of course their home made hash browns. Mr. W was particularly impressed with the quality of ingredients in his full Welsh breakfast.

Finally, must say a word about the staff and service. Everyone we met from check-in staff, village workers, buggy drivers and restaurant staff were professional and very friendly, nothing was too much trouble. In summary a great stay and for the price we paid excellent value for money.

The penthouse was a very nice space, with a feature fire unfortunately the weather was unseasonaly warm so we didn't need it, or the underfloor heating.
The bed was very comfortable and a good size, my husband wasn't overly pleased with the pillows but I slept well.
Breakfast was really great, a lot of choice available.
The staff were very pleasant and professional.
All in all a great stay, thank you all.

Room tip: Once you get to the second floor in the lift, there are stairs up to the penthouse.

Myself and my family recently visited the lovely village of portmeirion and had food at the castle, the food was very delicious and filling, staff were very kind and friendly one waiter in particular was amazing (young man, he did mention his name was osian jones i believe he said as we asked for his name so that we could add it in the review as his brilliant service should be noticed, he was from the area so he gave us plenty of activities to do during our stay) food was 10/10, we as a family can’t wait to return!
Thankyou portmeirion team you were all amazing ⭐️

We had the best sleep ! Tye best wads one of the best we've ever slept in.
The appartment was spotless and spacious with a lovely view to the beautiful garden
All staff were welcoming and friendly
The food was tasty and hot. However. It wax a little on the expensive side.
If bringing a family pack some food for the children.
We didn't have children with us. We went to celebrate our anniversary
This was not recognised by the Castle which would have been the icing on the cake for us.
However we will be planning a return visit 😊

Room tip: Bring snacks as amenities outside of Castle are limited

    First thing positives,
The starters and the mains stunning. The star of the show was the steak and the mussels which were amazing.
Highly recommend them, Portmerion itself is lovely,
    The grounds lovely.
    Staff generally polite

    The negative

The sticky toffee pudding sauce, super chemically made both me and my husband who ate it feel sick.
The main dining room was absolutely baking in the sun, but the views onto the gardens make up for it.
When you can grab a member of staff they will happily open windows or close blinds.
Unfortunately it was rather hard to get Their attention as they were gathered in full view of patrons, to have a coffee and a chat at the bar. So it took a bit of effort to flag them down.
This included, most anything really. I wouldn't begrudge them a break, but all of the servers but one who was attending to a large table. Who then was stuck also looking after the five other tables that where occupied, while a hoard of servers collected in the corner chatting away.
The bathrooms, were not clean the lady's loos had thick dust, in places, like on loo roll holders. You could see where someone previously swiped Thier finger through the dust, then more dust piled on top of that.
Basically, have a starter and main then go don't expect great service but hey you get to walk round port Marion

Went for the 3 course lunch menu really reasonably priced. The setting is really impressive (grounds are lovely) and so close to Portmeirion you can't go wrong. Had the Grilled plaice for main which was nice but the Sticky toffee pudding to finish was worth the price alone.
