It's one of those magical experiences that occur, not that often, when you are on holiday. Visiting the beautiful Trentino region, in North-East Italy, we came to osteria Oberwirt, in Lana, for the festival aimed at showcasing cooking with local herbs. Oberwirt was simply splendid: the food, intense flavours of the local produce, the hospitality of Renato and his team superb and the restaurant cosy and original, with tempting bowls of fruits on each table.
Renato, the host, was courteous and attentive: he gave us a little parcel of 'brutti ma buoni' biscuits (delicious) to take away and a tour of his vegetable garden, the atmosphere heady with the fresh early summer smells of herbs and lavender.
As the evening progressed, a friendly chat with next-table neighbours, returning guests, added to the pleasures of the food and the place.
A splendid osteria and splendid hospitality in this fabulous corner of North-East Italy, in Lana, very close to Merano and the Dolomites.
This is not a vegetarian restaurant but, as discerning vegetarians, we loved it and recommend it with pleasure.
