St. Gilgen has no shortage of pack-em-in feed-em-schnitzel type restaurants, most of which look as if they started out as characterful buildings, but which are now configured much like their food, for utility rather than character. Wirt am Gries sets itself apart. Discreetly positioned down a side street, the unviting alleyway entrance opens into a spacious courtyard, with well spaced tables for al fresco dining when weather permits. The indoor restaurant also exudes a higher standard than its near neighbours on the main street and lake front.
The menu is varied, and traditional, but quality of both food and service are a cut above the rest. There are restaurants with better views, but if its character and good food you are looking for, served in relaxed surroundings, Wirt am Gries is the place.
