Great neighbourhood hotel to escape the Manhattan chaos.

4.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 3 Nov 2024via mobile
We visited NYC as a family of 4 from the UK, for 7 nights.

When looking for accommodation, we wanted to be able to escape the chaos of Manhattan each evening and see a different, more local side to the city. If you are looking for a similar experience then I’d highly recommend the box house. It’s a really great small hotel, with great decor throughout and a cool, Brooklyn vibe.

Room size was excellent for a family of four. Much bigger than you would get in Manhattan for the same price. Our rate included a really good quality breakfast buffet. We also had a small kitchen to make some simple dinners on the evenings we didn’t want to eat out.

Location is superb. Lovely, trendy neighbourhood with good bars/restaurants and some really good food markets nearby (Lincoln Market and the end of the street is fab). Also a short walk to great views of the Manhattan skyline. Just under 10 minute walk over the Pulaski Bridge to Vernon Boulevard for the 7 Subway into Manhattan (1 stop to Grand Central), or walk the other way to Greenpoint Ave to get the Subway further into Brooklyn to explore.

Only reason for 4 stars, not 5 is that the room/maid service was a bit disorganised and erratic. On arrival we requested some extra pillows but it took well over an hour and several reminders to the desk for them to arrive. On another evening we had a knock on the door at 9:30 in the evening to ask if we wanted the room to be serviced! These issues certainly didn’t ruin our stay and I wouldn’t hesitate to visited the hotel again, but it’s something the management should take a look at and address.

Highly recommend The Box House.

This hotel is in keeping with the location in trendy Greenpoint, Brooklyn. It is modern warehouse style hotel. very informal and perfect for short stays in the area. Surprisingly poor service from the front desk staff on arrival, but otherwise the stay was enjoyable. The room was a decent size, positively large compared to what I expect in Manhattan, and comfortable enough. Decent no frills bathroom.

During my recent stay in Brooklyn from Oct 14 to 20, I endured three sleepless nights due to the guests in the room above mine (Room N°218 then 220) who were consistently making loud noise late into the night. Despite my repeated complaints to the front desk, nothing was done to address the issue. The hotel staff eventually moved me to another room, but the noise continued, leaving me frustrated and exhausted. Each night, I found myself calling or heading down to the lobby around 11 p.m. to report the disturbance again, yet the management never once reached out to apologize or offer any meaningful solution. The lack of concern for my comfort or a proper resolution made this stay incredibly disappointing!

Room tip: Make sure they upgrade their floor soundproof system ( they have many weddings) + Educate their clients to respect other clients

I had a terrible experience at The Box Hotel during my stay on the night of October 22, 2024. Late at night, just before midnight, I discovered that the door to my room, which led directly to the outside, would not lock. This was a serious safety issue. When I contacted the front desk, I was told by two different staff members that no one could help me and that nothing would be done to fix the problem until the following morning.

Feeling unsafe and with no other option, I had to leave the hotel in the middle of the night after a long day of traveling. To make matters worse, despite being assured that the manager would call me the next morning, I never received a call. I had to reach out myself, only to be told that the maintenance team claimed the door worked, which is completely false. I have video evidence proving that the deadbolt would not lock.

The complete lack of support, safety, and care from the staff was shocking. I expected the hotel to take responsibility for the issue, but instead, I was met with excuses and no real solution. I had to spend extra money on another Uber and a last-minute hotel after midnight, disrupting my entire evening.

I would not recommend staying at The Box Hotel in New York if you value your safety and expect decent customer service. This experience was stressful and disappointing, and I hope management takes steps to improve.

Room tip: Not safe and the manger, Denise, does not care, offer any solutions or take accountability.

If you love loud techno music blasting until 1130 pm at night then this is the hotel for you. If you have children or wish to sleep prior to 1130 pm consider making a reservation elsewhere. This hotel was advertised as quiet and family friendly and it could not be further from the truth. What a disappointment that we booked a room to get some sleep and could not do so. These private events occurred on both Friday and Saturday so I did not sleep much all weekend. There is also no manager on site all weekend so there was no one to assist us. I will not return. Also worth noting that our room had one fake window and no sunlight was available except for a skylight. Room 34 was dark and depressing.

Room tip: Avoid this hotel unless you love staying up late listening to loud electronic music

Breakfast was amazing!! Staff treated me very well and made me feel extra welcomed! The ambience of the hotel walking in felt very unique and interesting. I felt like I was entering a history museum at first and then it felt like I was in a scene from a movie. A great place to come if you want a classic touch of architecture and design
