Owner description: The New York Transit Museum, one of the city's leading cultural institutions, is the largest museum in the United States devoted to urban public transportation history, and one of the premier institutions of its kind in the world. The Museum explores the development of the greater New York Metropolitan region through the presentations of exhibitions, tours, educational programs, and workshops dealing with the cultural, social, and technological history of public transportation. Since its inception over a quarter century ago, the Museum, housed in a historic 1936 IND subway station in Brooklyn Heights, has grown in scope and popularity. As custodian and interpreter of the region's extensive public transportation networks, the Museum strives to share, through its public programs, this rich and vibrant history with local, regional, and international audiences.

I went with my son and 3 year old granddaughter. Kids love it because they can climb in and out of subway cars. They sit in the driver seat and steer a couple of buses. Recommend getting there when it opens. We stayed hour and half and place was packed when we left. This was on a Sunday so probably less on week days.

If you ever wanted to know about the start of the NYC transit system, this is the place to learn it! Set down in an old subway station in Brooklyn. On the bottom level are several old subway cars dating back many years, and on the main level, they show you the history of transit in NY. Plan to spend at least an hour, maybe two if trains and transportation are really interesting to you. Great stuff!

I just saw this when looking at google maps and once I started researching I thought it sounded interesting enough for a visit. My partner was sceptical, he was prepared to be bored but both of us thoroughly enjoyed this Museum. It's well set up and is full of all sorts of interesting displays.

I would absolutely recommend a visit here, it was a good cheap morning activity for us and they have a great souvenir shop too.

Ever go to a Museum that is in an old subway station? This is it - a remarkable underground space that traces the history of the New York Subways from construction to the changes in tokens - a deep dive into the subject of buukding and using subways - well worth the time if you are in Brooklyn - and it gives new meaning to the term "a hidden gem!
