Owner description: The Owens-Thomas House is considered by architectural historians to be one of the finest examples of English Regency architecture in America. Inspired by classical antiquity, this style of architecture takes its name from England’s King George IV, who ruled as Prince Regent from 1811 to 1820.The house was designed by the young English architect William Jay, one of the first professionally-trained architects practicing in the United States. The elegant residence was built from 1816 to 1819 for cotton merchant and banker Richard Richardson and his wife Francis Bolton. Mr. Richardson’s brother-in-law was married to Ann Jay, the architect’s sister. Three years after the house’s completion, Richardson suffered financial losses and sold his house, which later came under possession of the Bank of the United States.

You need to walk through on a very informative 45 minute guided tour that seeks to provide a balanced presentation of the "upstairs/downstairs" contrasts of life in this 19th century house between the owners and their slaves. The house is remarkably preserved and guides knowledgeable. Ticket includes admission to the two Telfair Museums, both worth visiting as well.

What a great tour! The tour guide (Gia) was knowledgeable and provided fascinating details about the house: construction, architecture, as well as, stories about family life in the wealthiest of Georgia families. What I enjoyed the most were the details about the slaves who were a part of the Owens-Thomas history. Gia made the tour come alive with her crisp commentary!

My husband and I enjoyed this house tour. The docent was very knowledgeable and answered all our questions. We learned about life of the homeowners and their slaves in a more urban setting. The curved architecture and the emphasis on symmetry was really beautiful. The tour included two other art museums so the cost is not bad at all.
A great tour while in Savannah.

Courteous and knowledgeable tour guide. House is still in a state of restoration and does not compare to other properties in the city.

The slave quarters were not what I expected based on books O have read, but perhaps town slave life was different than plantation slave life. The family home was quite modern and elegant and the contrast between the two was substantial. There was construction \ updating going on during our 45 minute guided tour. The workmen were obvious, but not distracting.
