I have been intending to check out Le Monde for some time , but there are so many good restaurants in the area that I wanted to be in the right frame for a fine French eatery . Today I stopped by for desert with my lady and one of her former students she had not seen for a long time . The deserts and service were both superb , our waiter and waitress ( her shift ended while the ladies chatted ) being clean and uncommonly professional ( standards have gone down everywhere ! ) . Seating was cozy , the decor was beautiful and tasteful....even the bathroom was a work of art in itself . We stayed for 2 1/2 hours on a $40 tab....and were never bothered to order more , while staff was always available . This is "old school".....a fine restaurant in more than décor gimmicks . A welcome change of place , the only thing missing being French classical music to soothe one from the hustle of Broadway . Le Monde is " water from another time" . Treat yourself !

We enjoyed dinner for 2 on New Year's. The $50 prix fixe was surprisingly good - as in very good.

The lobster salad included a generous portion of tail, while the foie gras pate was almost entirely goose liver. The salad greens on the lobster plate were a bit heavily dressed, but no big deal. The chocolate brioche for the pate was nothing special, but again, no big deal.

We each had the beef entrée which was essentially a beef wellington (mushrooms, no liver). It sat in a red wine reduction enriched with demi glace. It was pre-made and held at temp, and arrived on the medium side of medium rare. No big deal - we both enjoyed it immensely.

Dessert was a little weak - a tour of chocolate with pots de crème - very good, a chocolate ice over a piece of brownie-like cake - okay, and a dense chocolate tart-like thing that was a little disappointing. Dessert did not affect our overwhelmingly positive feelings about dinner.

Bar service as good, though Karen's perfect manhattan could have been a bit more perfect. We ordered the chateauneuf du pape, which was well worth the $100 (this was probably the most expensive bottle on the list). An after dinner pour of armangac and 12 year calvados was generous at $15 and $12 respectively. Both were tasty.

The espresso was good, too.

We would go again in a heartbeat, and I simply cannot understand how they serve this menu for $50.

Excellent establishment - great service , attentive waitrons, great menu - starters have numerous options as does entrees. Dessert is a must from tartlets to mousse to crepes ! Noise level low and easy speaking venue. A definite place to return to

Delicious food in a casual, non-pretentious setting makes this restaurant one of our favorites. You can't go wrong ordering the typically French offerings, and daily platters are always worthwhile. Good wine list too.
