I'm totally in love with this cabin! It was so easy to get to (5-10 minutes from major shopping area) but nestled up near the Blue Ridge Parkway and sooo quiet at night. Everything I could need was available and in working order. And I had so many blankets and quilts provided, I had to put a couple away because the cabin stayed cozy and warm with the central heating as well as the gorgeous gas log fireplace. Downtown Asheville is only 15 minutes away, but I hardly spent time in town -- just wanted to relax at the cabin. This was even a vacation for my dog - an active boxer mix, who loved sniffing around the large fenced-in yard (once red gate was closed) to look for mountain critters.
Georgia is an amazing host/owner who checked in to make sure I had what I needed, even for the dog! If you need to decompress from the stresses of post-holiday or work schedules and still feel like you're at home, this is the place!
A charming but frustrating cottage. Converted log cabin that has been remodeled/rebuilt with additions. Lots of patio space and a nice outdoor play area, but also doors that scrape the uneven floors and are hard to close. Bedrooms are small with little room around beds and two don't have any available drawer space. It was tight for us the first two nights with four adults and three kids, much better the last two nights with two adults and three kids.
When we arrived, the hot tub was not working because the circuit breaker had blown and not been reset with the previous tenants. As a result it was very cold and we were informed it would take a day or more to reheat. As it turned out, we never used the tub after it reheated, so it was not a problem.
Owner (Georgia) tries hard--fresh cookies plus personalized treats for the two dogs we ultimately had decided to leave at home--but she didn't handle problems well during our stay. The first morning we had problem with master toilet not refilling. We called and left message but didn't hear back until very late in day after we sent an email--apparently she doesn't check her voicemail very often. By then the problem had resolved itself while we were away, which was good because it was so late in day.
The last night we planned to barbecue a steak on grill (we had eaten dinners as well as lunches out before then). The grill wouldn't start--empty tank. In addition, the grill was filthy--clean on top, but spaces between bars were clogged with grease. We tried to broil, but there was no broiling pan for gas stove and the griddle was crusty with large blobs of stuff. When she returned our call, she said it would take 5 minutes to get tank at local store, but it was about 40 minutes before she arrived--without a refilled tank. When we asked about the filthy grill and griddle, she said, "I don't do dishes or pots and pans." I replied that we were happy to clean up after ourselves, but not previous tenants. When tenants don't clean up after themselves, I assumed landlord would have it cleaned and subtract something from the damage deposit, not leave it for the next tenant.
To be fair, our experience may have been the exception, judging by the many very positive reviews.
My family was enamoured by this beautiful cottage from the second we arrived! Red Gate Cottage is located in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains just a few short miles from restaurants, shops and attractions. The well-manicured gardens that surround this quaint home simply add to it's allure and charm. My husband and I planned our four-night getaway to Asheville on a whim with four of our five children, while our oldest was on a mission trip. Red Gate Cottage was booked solid, except for the exact four nights we were interested in. What a blessing! This 3BR/2BA cottage was a perfect fit for the six of us to create treasured family memories. We thoroughly enjoyed preparing delicious meals in the well-equipped kitchen and the corner booth was just the right design for game night. The private hot tub was a welcomed sight after a long day of hiking and exploring. We slept so well in the cozy bedrooms, it was easy to feel right at home. The owner, Georgia, has a beautiful gift of hospitality! We'll be sure to plan our stay at this lovely retreat again the next time we are visiting Asheville.

We had a wonderful time in Red Gate Cottage!
Georgia, the manager, was responsive and very helpful from my first inquiry; and left homemade cookies, note, and a bottle of wine for us. The cottage is authentically rustic on the outside and modernized and cozy on the inside. The beds are very comfortable and the bathrooms are very nicely remodeled. We loved the gas fireplace! Overall, everything was thoughtfully done and arranged. Red Gate Cottage has a mountain feel but is very close to town.
