This is a small theatre so I wouldn't worry about getting a bad seat. We went to a performance of "The Effect". It is not light hearted theatre. It was exceptionally well done. All actors were Equity. I wasn't crazy about the play, but that's a matter of taste. I couldn't get over the quality of the acting. I suspect if you want Mary Poppins, this won't be the theatre for you, but check it out anyway if you are in town when there's a production. I wish we would be there for Sundays in the park with George which comes up next.

I have just enjoyed a performance of 'The Effect' this evening. It was a very well acted, staged & directed contemporary play which was well received by the audience present.I recommend this thought provoking play. The theatre itself is an intimate, old, charming theatre situated in a historic building...beautiful! The play was introduced by a delightful theatre manager who invited the audience to introduce themselves to others sitting close by. She said that theatre is about promoting empathy & connection. This was a wonderful introduction & led to people discussing the play at intermission with others. Mine was a solo theatre visit but I ended up feeling very much part of the San Francisco theatre experience tonight.

The Playhouse gets better every year. I like that they talk about sitting in the dark with strangers to experience the wonder of theatre.
Dress warmly when you go in the winter. San Francisco builders pretend that California is a 24-hour sunny beach inside and out; the theatres can be very cold

“A BITING COMMENTARY ON THE CORRUPTING INFLUENCE OF MONEY ON POLITICS THAT FEELS ALL TOO RELEVANT TODAY.” – MERCURY NEWS
PLAY DETAILS
Harry, a ruthless, thuggish millionaire—with his showgirl fiancée, Billie, in tow—comes to Washington to bribe a senator and enrich his business interests. He soon hires a reporter to clean up Billie’s image; but as she awakens to a world full of possibilities, she starts to question corruption’s stranglehold over the disadvantaged. Garson Kanin’s delightful and dangerous comedy is a timely exploration of politics, profiteering, and the importance of an educated electorate.”

The acting was excellent. Millie Brooks as Billie was great. I enjoyed it more than the movie that I watched on UTube.
Check it out if you are in San Francisco from now til March 10, 2018 or look at SF Playhouse performances schedule to see upcoming play if you are coming in the future .

SF Playhouse is housed in a remarkable space. It is on the second floor above iconic Farallon restaurant in the Kennsington Park Hotel building. The theater is intimate and holds about 200. Don't let the small size keep you away because the productions are top notch. We went to see The Christmas Story and it was wonderful.
