For the record, I rarely give 5 stars so this rating means I really liked this place a lot. We rented a 1 bedroom condo with ocean view, a king bed and a fold out sofa (G307 to be exact). Our unit came with a fully functioning kitchen which enabled us to cook when we wanted to. There are also 6 gas grills surrounding the swimming pool, which was only a short walk from our unit, as another cooking option, and they worked great. We are so glad we stayed here instead of a hotel because the prices were about the same yet this spacious unit was probably 3 times the size plus having a full kitchen and thus allowed family members to sleep over and that enhanced our visit a lot. Everything was in good condition and if anything stopped working, a call to the front desk would send someone up to fix it almost immediately. We were very impressed the customer service. The noise levels were always modest and we were never disturbed either sleep-wise or in any other way. The location of this place gives much easier access to the grocery store and local restaurants than the hotels in Kaanapali would offer--there, one would pretty much be a prisoner of the hotel because you would have to travel a fair distance to find grocery stores and restaurants outside the hotel. Here, the grocery store was literally across the street and an ABC store (Hawaii's version of QuikTrip) was also within easy walking distance. The room even had a safe, paddles for tennis plus golf clubs and balls for the putting green that was just below our room. The pool was not very large, but it was quite nice, and as mentioned, offered 6 Weber gas grills for cooking which worked very well. We were totally satisfied with our stay here--only complaint at all is the high prices but for Maui, this was reasonable. We would have paid almost the same at the Sheraton and gotten a lot less room for our money. Next time, we will probably try to come a different time of the year to save a bit on the rate (which was extremely high for the mainland, but eminently reasonable on Maui where virtually everything costs way more than it does almost anyplace else). I should mention that parking was free for our rental car and there were always spaces fairly close to our unit. One more thing--when we paid the extra money for an ocean view we didn't expect to be within 75 or 100 feet of the ocean, but we were. We had amazing views from our balcony and got to see numerous whales. The $43 per night upgrade for an ocean view is totally worth it in our opinion. Finally, they have carts available all the time to help get your luggage and/or groceries back to your room in one trip and they have elevators so no stair climbing if you don't want to. One more thing--there were 2 TV's and the one in the living room got an astounding range of channels. The one in the bedroom didn't receive nearly as many for whatever reason. Bottom line, we had one of the most satisfactory lodging experiences I can ever recall. Would definitely stay here again. One more thing--staff can be found everywhere doing something. I believe their high staffing level really contributed to how well everything looked and worked. While you would see staff around a lot, it was never intrusive in any way. In other words, unlike some places, they don't skimp on the staff and service here.

Room tip: ask for ocean view--it's totally worth it; building G offered great views and was also close to the parking lot

In this review I'll review the specific unit as well as the amenities around Papakea.

THE RESORT
We booked our room through a third party site (Maui Dreams Come True) and stay was excellent. We arrived at midnight due to a late flight and were greeted by night security who got us our key and pointed us towards our room. You will need to check in your cars. Each unit gets one free car and additional cars come at a cost.

There is a daily island information session led by the onsite Expedia excursion experts held in the southern pool cabana each morning. This gives you information on helicopter tours, snorkeling, sunset cruises and other excursion activities). They also help with information on the island itself and helpful places to go and see (restaurants, beaches, activities). The Expedia experts are located by the main desk and are there from 7AM to 5PM.

There are two pools at the resort each with a hot tub. There is BBQ around the pool area which are usable on a first come first serve basis. There are large putting greens around each pool area as well. The grounds are very beautifully kept with various flowers, palm trees and a fish pond.

There are a few programs that take place at the resort during certain seasons. There is morning yoga, lei making, Mai tai party and pool exercise sessions.

There is no beach at the resort. If you head north up the road about 5 minutes (walking) there is a park with a beach (there is a shallow water area swimming area good for smaller children). If you head south along the water there are some other Aston resorts that you are also able to check out. There is smaller beach areas at those resorts.

There is a grocery store near the front entrance to the resort as well as an ABC store which has a wide variety of things. There is a Safeway about 5 minutes south. Kapalua beach is about 5 minutes north and is and amazing snorkeling beach.

THE UNIT:
We booked our room through a third party site (Maui Dreams Come True) and stay was excellent. We arrived at midnight due to a late flight and were greeted by night security who got us our key and pointed us towards our room. The room has 3 rooms (1 king size bed room, 1 double bed and single bed, a loft with a double bed and 2 single beds). The room with the king has a double sink vanity and private bathroom with shower. Each room has large closets. There is a washer and dryer in the unit. There is an air conditioning unit in the living room. The table in the dining room seats 6 people and there are 3 additional chairs at the kitchen bar. The kitchen is stocked with items (toaster, blender, iron/ironing board, coffee maker, microwave).

The unit comes with needed supplies (towels, linens) and starter supplies for the stay (one roll of toilet paper per bathroom, limited detergent and soap). There is also some other nice features in the room (a small beach umbrella, a few putters and golf balls for the putting green, two snorkeling sets). You will need your own beach towels.

There are not basic items like salt, condiments, and other spices and sauces.

The rooms are non-smoking and there is a designated smoking areas around the resort.

The view from the G building is great, you can see the pool area as well as the ocean with a great view of the sunset. You are not able to hang anything on your patio area or keep things other then shoes out in front of your unit.

Our family stayed here for a week at New Years. The facility is nice. There are 2 pool/hot tub areas and a couple of shuffleboard areas. The staff are friendly and our room was clean and pleasant. There's almost no beach here, but the location is pretty good. Lots of barbecues around the pool, but we preferred the little takeout restaurants across the road.

We enjoyed our stay and I'd recommend the Aston Papakea for families.

We've stayed at Papakea several times over the last decade through our timeshare. The resort is not upscale, and although oceanfront, has no beach. This is fine with us, as the property is very quiet as a result. Lively beach scene can be had just down the road at Kaanapali, and first class snorkeling beach up the road at Kapalua. After a day of activity it is lovely to return to the calm and quiet of Papakea. The grounds are beautiful and well kept, and our units are always very nice.

Room tip: Ocean views are lovely!
