Although we had booked our nights at the Aston in advance on Kayak, when we arrived for check-in, they couldn't find us in their system. This was frustrating since we had not choice but to wait around until they fixed it.
The rooms themselves are fine, nothing fancy at all. The concierge was helpful.

Stayed: April 2016

I'm writing this while sitting on the balcony of our oceanfront room in the Kauai Building. Watching the waves coming up on the beach and seeing the people strolling down the path. Comfortable, clean, hotel-type room with mini-kitchen. Microwave, Keurig with free coffee, small refrigerator, dishes and utensils. Air conditioned, flat screen TV and DVD player. Queen size bed. Coffee shop (with coupons for free coffee), bar lounge, and small restaurant (with good and inexpensive food) on the premises. Many other restaurants and shops, a Safeway, a Foodland, and a Rite Aid all less than a mile away. Front desk staff are pleasant and helpful. Concierge on duty every day. This is the third time we have stayed here, with good reason.

Room Tip: Ocean front are best; ocean view would be a good second choice.

We stayed directly on the beach-and for us this was a saving grace of the room. Dead on views and lulled to sleep by the sound of waves- who cares if it was small and only a service kitchen. But if it were not on the beach, I think I'd pass if it was just one of the garden facing rooms. Still the place has charm, the people are extremely nice, you are right near the wonderful bike trail and we loved the coffee grindery -IMU - simply wonderful, and Trees , a cute music and food place where we had our breakfasts every morning and loved the owner and wait staff0 ,,,, and then Java Java is right next time for drinks and dinner- and great restaurants are a five minute drive. We loved the neighborhood, amenities and spirit of the place. We had a five star experience in a four star place. ( three stars if you are not facing the water)

Room Tip: get one of the beach facing rooms!!!!

We stayed at 3 hotels during our travel and Aston Islander was one of them. The overall experience was decent. Nothing special about this place. However, when we were checking out, I caught the extra 20 dollars fee per night ( in addition to tax) that we were charged for. I asked about the reason and I was told it is the resort fee. We stayed in other resorts and we didn't experience any hidden fees. I checked my emails and I saw they specified it in the final reservation but it wasn't shown when I was booking the hotel.
I don't like hidden fees and if I knew about this I would have booked a different place.

We had a room with an aweful, mouldy smell and noisy airconditioning. We only stayed there for two nights, so we survived, but we definitely will not stay in this hotel again - at least not in its current state.
