The Mermaid House was the perfect vacation get away for us and our two adult daughters. Everyone had their own room and the kitchen was perfect for our daughter who is allergic to wheat gluten. She cooked at home everyday since her doctor has recommended not eating out during her pregnancy. Besides the well appointed kitchen, the entire house was very comfortable. We loved the history of the house built by Peggy Slater in the 1960’s with the skill and perfection of a local Japanese Hawaiian cabinet maker. It’s beautiful!! With the beach, snorkeling, big waves, and beautiful sunsets a short walk from the house it was paradise! We’re already planning another family reunion with husbands and grandchildren next time! Thank you, Jane for a wonderful home to come back to.
The Mermaid House and its owner Jane were fantastic!
The house is only a few yards from the beach, with two access paths within walking distance from the front door. We took our coffee and toddler down for the sunrise most mornings. We could not have asked for a more affordable, beautiful home so close to the water!
It's also not a long walk down to Tunnels. We walked from the beach most days and saw sea turtles almost daily.
The house also has a great layout for families. Our son loved the low couches and having two bathrooms was great!
This is a fantastic home for those who wish to be right near a very beautiful beach. This home has beautiful high ceilings and wood paneling with lovely touches. We took our tea mugs to be beach most mornings and on a day, when the surf was lower, we spotted whales! The home is lovely with great original Hawaiian art and craft. I spent a wonderful week with my older daughters. The landscaping was a lush green, typical of the north shore. Great snorkeling nearby and wonderful sunsets at Kee beach.
We are a family of 5 and we all enjoyed this house. It has a ton of character and is very comfortable. The living room has 2 extra couch type beds that everyone loved to lounge on. The beds in the rooms were large and comfortable. The kitchen is totally functional and easy to cook in. Basically the house had everything we needed. The location is also fantastic only 2 miles from beautiful Ke'e Beach and the Napali Coast hike. It's right across the street from a gorgeous beach that was good for boogie boarding, swimming and star gazing. Loved it!
We thoroughly enjoyed our two week stay at Mermaid House. The house is a 5 minute walk from a beautiful uncrowded beach, and an easy walk on the beach or road to Tunnels Beach to the west and Kepuhi Beach to the east, both offering spectacular snorkeling. The house itself felt spacious and comfortable, even for seven of us (5 adults and 2 young kids). We found the house clean and well furnished and the fascinating decor is full of charm and nostalgia. There is a large and private yard and large lanai. We enjoyed outdoor barbecues almost every night. There is adequate space off the road to park two cars. The house is on a dirt road with little traffic that runs parallel to the Kuhio highway, far enough off the highway that you don't hear any traffic. There don't seem to be as many red jungle fowl (chickens) on the north shore, so you won't hear as much crowing as you might elsewhere on Kauai. But you will frequently hear the beautiful songs of the white-rumped shama, of which there are a large number in the area. The house is not new, and you may encounter a sticky door or two, but in general we found everything well equipped and maintained. The owner was very responsive to emails and all our interactions with her were great. We'll definitely return to the Mermaid House in the future.
