Sandy's place is the total package. It is right on the ocean, with waves crashing against the lava rocks to lull you to sleep. Her living room and bedroom layouts and furniture make lounging comfortable, and her kitchen is well-stocked with all the tools you need. We appreciated her attention to detail - nice soaps, towels, and linens, and use of binoculars (essential on trips to Volcanoes National Park). Thanks for a lovely stay, Sandy!
This very private second floor one-bedroom faces the Pacific ocean crashing on black lava boulders just a few feet below the wonderful deck. Every amenity, fully equipped kitchen, breezy ceiling fans. The drama of the Puna area is at the doorstep, the exotic rainforest coast and beaches, Lava Tree Park, active volcano around the corner. While tucked away, the Big Island is completely accessible. We received excellent driving directions, house instructions, area pointers - adventurous location. Note ambient noise - loud waves and tree frogs.
We loved this condo right on the ocean. It had plenty of room and was well equipped with anything you could ask for. Telescopes and binoculars for whale watching, lots of DVDs for the TV. There were even swimming "noodles"and beach towels to take to the beach. The owner was very quick to answer our questions and the gardener/cleaning lady even helped with our luggage. Down side? no cell phone service. We didn't mind, WiFi worked well and we kept in touch with people via face book on computer.
We have been six times to the Puna district of Hawaii over the last two decades, and this place was the best rental of all of them -- and they were all good. We enjoyed being so close to the ocean and the pounding waves, which are dramatic to look at and lulling to listen to. The view is spectacular. We saw whales at a distance. The apartment is beautifully furnished, and the kitchen has every amenity you need. Sandy is a pleasant and obliging host, and eager for you to get the most out of your stay (for example changing batteries in the TV remote for us, which had rusted from the sea air). This is a place for lounging in, but it is also within walking distance of Kehena Beach (which is a scramble to get down to, and not always safe for swimming, but the only beach in this part of the Big Island), and it is an easy drive to Pahoa for restaurants, groceries, pharmacy, etc. And the "red road" along the shore, northward, holds many other delights. However, If your interest is in exploring the whole of the Big Island, you might want to be more central. Puna is special, a bit wild, and maybe not for everyone. But if you like it, you can't get enough of it.
My only negative thought in writing this review is that it will encourage others to make bookings, maybe conflicting with our desired times! Just before writing this, I put in a booking request for the same place next year, 2016. I can't put it any stronger than that.

The perfect equipped condo is located a few miles south of Pahoa. It lies directly at the shoreline surrounded by rainforest. The next supermarket is in Pahoa. For trips Hilo could be a better location, as most of the scenic points can only be reached via Hilo. Still, I would always go back there as it is so cute and relaxing to be there.
