Jungle Hideaway is a comfortable and well-equipped home. It's location is very private and quiet at the edge of a subdivision. The screened lanai is a major plus. The unit itself is better than average but other factors reduce this rating. We visited during trying times during the development of a major eruption. We booked this unit mainly for its location central to three things: 1. Volcanoes Nat. Park; 2. Beach Road access to Lower Puna tidepools, blacksand beach and other beach/volcano related parks; 3. Convenience to Hilo and rainforest located near north of Hilo. The first two were completely inaccessible and at this time remain closed for the foreseeable future. Anyone considering renting this unit needs to seriously consider closures that dramatically reduce the attractiveness of this location. Also, an important consideration compared to other rentals through owner websites: this unit is agency managed. We requested a change of dates to a time when the current eruption ended. We offered to let the agency hold our fully paid rent and apply it to a low-season period in the future. There was no movement from the letter of their rental agreement and no allowance for change of date without significant financial penalty. Thus we came as scheduled but there could have been a better solution. In an area with as much fluid change of conditions as this one, you need to carefully consider what might change impacting the attractiveness of your stay if you book well in advance. We also had major issues with the response time on a few matters regarding condition of the unit that were management related and not basic issues about the unit. In the past, renting from individuals, service has been much better. Finally, though Jungle Hideaway is in a subdivision named Hawaiian Beaches, there is no beach. It is rocky coastline. Due to the eruption, nearby beaches cannot be reached. Be sure you check current conditions before you book.
