“Definitely Rustic, Very Dated and Not Very Private”
Reviewed 2 June 2014 for a stay in May 2014

This property was significantly different than we expected based on the pics, descriptions, and reviews. It's a decent place to stay, as long as you understand a few things up front:

1) This property is about 30 mins outside of White Salmon. The last 2 miles are down a twisting, unpaved, one lane active logging road (we had to pull over to accommodate logging trucks). The "Lothlorian" forest is depressingly clear cut around the road on the way in. Bring a vehicle that you are comfortable taking off-road.

2) This property is not very private. It is essentially on the edge of a farm; the door and grill area facing the adjacent barn and home, both of which contain human residents. The barn neighbor's dog came over to visit us a few times. Fortunately, we love dogs, but this big dog could have easily scared someone less dog-friendly. The dog's owner spent a significant amount of time on the phone on his front porch in the evenings (facing us), and it was easy to hear his conversations clearly across the small open field.
Additionally, someone is working on a new building project about ten feet from the entrance to the tree house, which makes it feel like you're in the way.

3) This property is dated and off the grid. The mixed tape collection inside was interesting, but the part that sent us flying back to town was the fact that there is no cell service or internet reception. We spent the first evening back in town downloading music and podcasts.

4) The "treehouse" is definitely rustic and home-built from scratch. The floor slants significantly to the south, which gave me a vertigo-like feeling. The spiral staircase is extremely narrow, and the top floor ceiling is very low in some important places (around the bed). There is an active squirrel who lives just on the other side of the ceiling, who scurries around each morning (very close to your head). We thought at first it was rats, but the friendly little guy descended a little later to say hi.

Knowing these things up front, I would not have chosen this vacation rental. Vacation rentals are a huge part of the economy in this area (a local bartender told us), and I'm sure there are much more comfortable ones out there.

One amazing plus of this rental is the large hot tub. That was great.

Three year ago my sister, a friend and I decided to do a "girls" weekend out at Lothlorien Woods Tree House. Ever since then that has been our special place! I have traveled extensively and stayed in many beautiful places, but I have never been to one as magical as this tree house - truly a little piece of Paradise! Peaceful, Serene, and Rejuvenating. The scent of the trees, birds chirping, clear nights with limitless stars, the sky-lift swing and complete absence of traffic noise made us fall in love with this magical place. Every time we leave we wish we could stay longer, but until we return our fond memories always take us back!

“Expect the Unexpected - Hot Tubbing in the Trees under the Stars!”

There is nothing like being in the trees, under the stars and enjoying music and great conversation with your partner. Our travels have taken us to many unique and enjoyable places, however our stay at Lothlorien was right out of a story book from our childhood. Whimsical, romantic, fun and secluded... we felt as though we had stumbled upon a secret hiding place only known to a select few and now we are one of the "Lothlorien Secret Society."

Take your books, favorite music, a bottle of wine, best friend and enjoy - we did!
