“Well appointed home with majestic views of the Blue Ridge Mtns.”
Reviewed 3 April 2018 for a stay in March 2018

The entire process of renting this large beautiful home deep in the woods was made very easy by the owner. She answered all of my questions as they arose. Plenty of hiking occurred, yoga was held outside gazing out over a valley towards the mountains, and lots of walks were enjoyed. Some enjoyed the sauna after their hikes. Every amenity that one has in their own home was also in this home. We enjoyed our evenings out at the Inn at Little Washington and The Griffin Inn, both very close in proximity to The King Mountain House. We all want to go back!

“Thoroughly charming”

We booked The King Mountain House at the last minute to escape from a rather soulless “mountain retreat” outside Charlottesville that turned out to be too retreated for its own good. The King Mountain House shares some similarity in being ‘modern’, but it’s modernism of the 60s rather than of now. Which means the two-and-a-half storey home is packed to the gills with memorabilia, antiques and furniture. Some of it may be quirky—the lectern in the living room with a map, binoculars and magnifying glass, is an example—but the overall effect is warm and homely, which is what we were looking for after the bleakness of the previous establishment. The kitchen is best described as ‘functional’, meaning that one can achieve what one wants provided one searches through cupboards and drawers for the right implements. It’s certainly not modern and could do with some bringing up to date. Still, there are a number of restaurants nearby to tempt one away from the delights of home cooking. We considered the five star ‘The Inn at Little Washington’, but swiftly concluded that $300 per person w/o wine was more than our AmEx account could reasonably stand. The house has a great gazebo-covered patio area with an eclectic collection of chairs and tables. There’s also a raised deck by the side of the house with a BBQ and more tables and chairs. For just two people, there’s a ridiculous amount of space inside the house, including the main living area on the ground floor with comfortable leather sofas, a snug/library on the lower ground with a bedroom, bathroom and another sitting out area, and then the mezzanine with the main bedroom, bathroom and dressing room. To be honest, the décor shows its age, but part of the charm of The King Mountain House is that one’s staying in someone’s home, albeit of a yesteryear. In short, it was thoroughly charming.

“Full amenity mountain retreat!”

Wonderful rental! The house was very comfortable with a great well-equipped kitchen. The location was secluded and quiet with wonderful views. Restaurants and shops were an easy drive.

“Breathtaking views and friendly owners!!”
Reviewed 29 May 2015 for a stay in May 2015

Our stay at the King Mountain house was nothing less than perfect. The house itself is something out of a movie. The scenery is breathtaking and relatively untouched. The owner were friendly, and warm hearted. We recommend this house to anyone looking to get away from the noise for a while!
