As I've mentioned in another review, our closest town (Whangarei) doesn't have a decent theatre with good acoustics, so we've driving all the way down from Tutukaka to Auckland for world class events like music, theatre and ballet, etc.
But recently we spotted something we really wanted to attend and it was being held at the Turner Centre in Kerikeri.
We wish we'd discovered this venue long before now because it would have saved us the long journey and expensive hotels in Auckland.
The Turner Centre theatre itself isn't large, but it can seat a few hundred people in a beautifully raked auditorium with what look like comfortable seats and the acoustics are superb. But our concert given by the Jade Quartet wasn't in the main theatre. It was in the bar area which is a more intimate and comfortable setting for a classical music string quartet.
And it's close to the bar.
There's a good feeling at the Turner Centre. The people who work there are part of the Kerikeri community and very welcoming to visitors such as ourselves. The audience was friendly and attentive (from old to young) and the atmosphere warm.
Now that we've broken the ice we'll be looking out for more reasons to visit the centre and enjoy the kind of events we've been missing out on in Whangarei.
Beautifully presented, well organised and tasty finger foods available.I bid and won a lovely silver vase dated 1930.All proceeds from the evening went to finance services by the Mid North Hospice. The orchestra deserve a memorable mention. The event was very well attended.
The first show we've seen at the Turner Centre since moving here a couple of months ago, and very impressive: a superb space put to full use with stunning lighting, sound, movement and voices. A nice bar for a glass of wine before the show, a chat with the performers afterwards -- we felt we were privileged to experience a top quality show rather than a little local event. Wonderful venue, stunning show.
The Turner Centre is truly a gem in small town Kerikeri. Catering for a wide range of shows and private and commercial activities in three auditorium The excellence of this centre reflects on the founding members who put so much effort into building a world class theatre. The main theatre seats 400+ including private boxes. It hosts a biannual international piano competition which is usually over subscribed as well as some of the top musical groups touring NZ. A must see when visiting the Bay of Islands.
I have attended a couple of musical performances at this centre. The building is modern; the seating excellent and the acoustics first rate. Those running the centre are nearly all volunteers and certainly those in attendance when I visited it were very friendly and very helpful.
What an amazing facility for Kerikeri, almost entirely run by volunteers. Clean, modern and all events able to be catered for. I have been to concerts, funerals, flower shows, casual music afternoons and public meetings in the Centre. About the only downside is the lack of a lift although there are stairs with good handrails and a long ramp between floors.
