Absolute Enchanted Break in Nature

5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 2 Mar 2018
I had to think twice before putting a review on Trip Advisor as this place is so special that you kind of want to keep it secret... or only tell your closest friends about it!
It would be a cliche to only say that the view on the Cavalli Islands is amazing, the beds comfortable and the food excellent. Close your eyes, listen to the birds and cicadas, fill your lungs with the mix flowers and bush scents, enjoy a homemade breakfast cooked with love by Carole (eggs from the chucks, fruits from the garden, honey from the beehives, homemade bread and jams, fresh flowers on the table...), explore the treasures of the Bay of Islands and the Far North during the day, visit the beehives with Frank or take a cooking lesson with Carole (she is on youtube now!!!) and spoil yourself with a massage at the Spa or a dip in the jacuzzi to end this perfect day. A stay at Cocozen is a journey for the senses! Carole, Frank and Tea have created a little haven, where the pace of life is slower, focus is on of quality of life, and living in harmony with the world around you is most important. Thank you so much for a wonderful stay!!! Sara, Manu, Noah and Lucie

Where do I begin? Honestly this has to rate as some of the best hospitality and service I have ever received. My wife and I went to Cocozen to celebrate our 22nd wedding anniversary. From the very moment Carole picked us up, she was welcoming, friendly and eager to please. She told us interesting stories about the area, the lodge and her family's journey to Northland from France via Tahiti. She is clearly very passionate about what she does and it shows in her attention to every detail.

The lodge has amazing views and gardens and is so peaceful, it's good for the soul. We both had the most indulgent massages in the spa. Carole made sure we were well hydrated with lovely lemon water and refreshing peppermint tea afterwards. We had free use of the spa bath to to aid the relaxation.

In the lounge before dinner, seated by the roaring fire we were served a Kir Royale style aperitif with freshly made bread and cheese with honey harvested on the lodge grounds. Be sure to buy some of Frank's (Carole's husband) honey before you leave.

At night we were treated to a fantastic exclusive three course dinner cooked to perfection by Carole in the lodge restaurant. With lovely French pop music playing in the background and tasty wine from the local Marsden Winery. We were treated like royal guests in her home. Very special, a night we will always remember.

The passion and attention to detail really make this a true pearl of the north. If you want comfort, luxury and to restore your inner peace, Cocozen must be on your list!

    Merci beaucoup!

What a find - can't praise this place highly enough. Taking full advantage of what nature has to offer, with gorgeous home made wooden furniture, home grown fruit + vegetables used to create the most stunning array of dishes, beautifully delivered + presented. The small finishing touches created a lovely ambience of peace, tranquility and relaxation. A bit of a drive to get there, but keep your eye on the prize - highly recommend this beautiful place. Thanks again to all - certainly one of the many highlights of my trip to NZ:) xx

What a beautiful and peacefull lodge. Birds as alarm, Cavali's island as a view and amazing Takou Bay beach, this is the place to rest and discover the wonderful Northland. You can go for a ride, or a walk, in the area and enjoy Carole's cuisine for dinner. Why have i left this zen eden?

We have stayed at Cocozen several times and love its peace and tranquility. The uncluttered self contained chalets have everything you need, are beautifully private and have sweeping views of Takou Bay. There is a touch of French Tahiti in their styling which adds to the "get away from it all" feeling. We have enjoyed the pool and spa especially on clear nights where it seems you can see every star in the sky.
Hosts Carole and Frank are the loveliest people and can't do more to make you feel welcome. Ask to see Carole's black pearl jewellery which she makes from the pearls Frank dives for and brings home from Tahiti. Exquisite! Daughter Tea raises the world's cutest rabbits so that's a little added bonus!
I cannot recommend this little treasure more highly. If you want a real break away, definitely try Cocozen.

Myself, my mum and a couple of friends stayed at one of the lodges at Cocozen over the Xmas & New Year period and we had the most wonderful time. On arrival Carole welcomed us in to our chalet which honestly felt brand new! There were fresh flowers in the bed room, home made jams, chutneys in the kitchen and even little flowers in the bathroom. Instantly we felt at home and welcomed to this beautiful place. We were surrounded by beautiful green NZ and could even see the sea! The facilities were equally as fantastic, a lovely pool to which more often than not we had to our selves! We appreciated the gym and the yoga room (despite being a little lazy to use!!) One night we ate in the restaurant which was ultimately our own private dinner party - compliments to Carole who is a wonderful cook! We enjoyed walking around the chilled, relaxing forest and often enjoyed a Jacuzzi nestled behind the spa - where we all enjoyed a treatment. The holiday from start to finish was rather enjoyable and Carol and her family were on hand day or night to assist us if we needed anything - nothing really was too much trouble. This was the kind nature of the family - not because they had to :) I would recommend to anybody to visit this spot and I have already planned to go back in March for a long weekend! If I had to make any suggestions for improvement I would say please make it possible to have wifi in the chalet - however you could plug in a lap top old school style or access free WIFI in the restaurant... But to be honest we hardly noticed this as a problem due to being so content in our surroundings ! It was also a pleasure to meet the young French couple one day in the pool who were their doing 'Woofin' (working for board and accommodation) and being a backpacker my self previously it was nice to hear that they enjoyed being there and were being looked after and treated well by the family! Thank you Carole & Frank , I look forward to coming back ! Limara
