I went for a long weekend with a friend of mine. The host (Mary) is very warm, welcoming and knowledgeable but not intrusive. The standard of the accommodation very good. It has everything you may need. It was lovely to wake up with the low clouds just above the patio. There is a definite temperature difference between the mountainside on which The Adega sits and the local towns but the local beauty and quiet area (except for the fish man) certainly make up for this. I was informed that there is also an annual car rally that goes right past the apartment. I can only imagine what a sight that must be. I would be happy to return here again and in fact look forward to it in the summer months.
The local town (Machico) offers a range of shops (shoes galore amongst other things) and a quaint beach. I enjoyed the snack provided by street vendors. I can't remember the name but it was like a panini with chorizo and garlic butter. Yum!
I would encourage you to visit Funchal, visit the markets, take a cable car to the mountains and take an exciting trip back down in the toboggans. I would also recommend hiring a car for the duration of your visit to give you freedom to visit some of the lesser known areas.
