Stayed there for 3 nights with a group touring north of Portugal.
The pousada is delightful, the staff very friendly.
Due to it being an old convent the bedroom window was very small.
Nethertheless a very enjoyable stay.

Stayed: April 2017
Thank sophienoelle

As repeater customers we (2 of us) were delighted to visit this Pousada again. It belongs to our top two pousada favourites. It is a hidden gem really for those who want to enjoy the peace and beauty of rural Portugal. The staff was very kind and helpful as ever, so our 3-day stay was a most pleasant one. If you want to relax and enjoy the Beira Alta landscape, wine and gastronomy, this is the place to go.

Over the past 37 years I've stayed in probably 20 or more pousadas and this has to be one of the finest. Definitely way off the beaten track, sensitively renovated and beautifully maintained, a shame it gets so little trade. It must have cost a fortune to restore this to 21st Century luxury hotel standards. We took a stroll through the village which included communal wash tubs reconditioned as late as 2004. That's probably when running water was established. There was only one other couple the night we stayed. The service was completely professional, even though the food was just ordinary. This is definitely the place if you like peace and quiet and luxurious surroundings.
Hint: If coming from Coimbra or south do not follow your GPS; it will send you on a twisty single track goat path. There are signposts from the main road (N17?) which is miles better than it was on our last time through here in 1980.

Room Tip: 106 was spectacularly good

This is a beautifully restored convent with lots of the original features, lovely old antique furniture, oil paintings, original statues and there is even a gorgeous small chapel that is still in its original state. I absolutely loved this building. The one downside is that I arrived late at night when it was dark! When I went down for breakfast I was amazed at the wonderful views across vineyards towards the mountains. My room was spacious, comfortable. There was no view but as I was on a cycling tour and had arrived late without a booking, I was lucky to get a room! I would have stayed another night but the pousada was fully booked for the following night.

Would totally recommend but make sure you arrive early to enjoy the tranquil atmosphere of the hotel and the stunning views.

Dear Mary M,

We thank you for the beautiful comments you posted on TRIP ADVISOR!
We were delighted to learn that you enjoyed the grandeur of the convent of Recompense, once inhabited by nuns of the cloister. This Convent more than two centuries of history, it was built in the late 18th century, having been transformed into different institutions throughout the ages, namely: Municipal Hospital (the first in the country), summer camp "Air & Sun" (one of the best in Europe), residence for the returnees peoples from Angola, after the revolution of 25 April 1974 and finally the convent was converted into a Pousada de Portugal with all the comfort and glamour, in the service of tourism.
The surrounding are really stunning and want to dispense some time in his contemplation and exploration of each corner.
Once again we are grateful for your testimony that fills one more page of history of this Pousada Convento de Vila Pouca da Beira. All the team of the hotel is delighted to have contributed so that your experience with us was filled with Memorable Moments!
We wait for You, Family and Friends, at the next opportunity and we wish you the best in this new year of 2017!!!

If ever there was a superb secret place to go to get away from it all, this is it. Remote (great), poor access roads (improves exclusivity), small (just what you want for a secret location), beautiful interior (as with all Pousadas), outstanding views (but the views actually belong to Portugal rather than the Pousada!), small, homely atmosphere (which Is why I go back). Overall quality of the evening meals could perhaps improve, but when you go to a secret location for a break, eating should not be the major priority. This place does not look so good from the online photos (so, maintains exclusivity), but is so serene it needs a 6th star. I just hope this review does not make this Pousada too busy.

Room Tip: Visit first, find out which view you prefer and ask for it when you go back. Because you will.
