Jeannette and Rene are excellent hosts and have created an amazing and authentic experience at La Fenella. It is so beautiful, their hard work and love for the area, nature and animals really comes through. I was there for the Truffle weekend, but I received so much more in the form of good conversation, respect for the area and knowledge of products and local culture.
The apartments are beautiful and the area is perfect for hiking, visiting beautiful old towns, searching truffle (of course only with a licensed guide), tasting wine at gorgeous wineries and enjoying the scenery.
Our group of six friends stayed here for an extended weekend in early November 2016. After a very long day's travelling, and slightly confusing directions (the sat nav's fault, not Rene the owner's), we arrived to this beautiful house brilliantly lit in a pitch-black valley, and nestled in the mountains - truly off the beaten track. We were met by a warm reception and some delicious local wine provided by Rene.
So began a lovely weekend at La Fanella. The house itself is huge but cosy, decked out in half-Dutch minimalist, half-Roman villa style - all very tasteful. There is a full kitchen which we used to cook for six with no trouble. Rene was always on hand for help if we needed it: an extra towel, or a local recommendation. In the evenings we could always count on a visit from him for a glass of wine or two, although he never outstayed his welcome. In fact it was great fun to get to know him!
On our second night Rene organised for a local chef to come and cook us a 4 course meal - it was simple but delicious. We even tried white truffle which Rene had been saving for us in his fridge.
We didn't make it very far into the surrounding countryside, so satisfied were we with the peace and tranquillity of the place, and with enjoying our friends. But it is truly beautiful out there, stacked full of walks, truffle hunts, quad bikes etc. - great for an adventurous group.
I would highly recommend this place to anyone wanting to get away from the buzz, but who still wants a little bit of interaction.
And I almost forgot about Floris. Rene's son - so lovely, a genuinely kind and sensitive kid, and a pleasure to have around. Make sure you get him to show you Sjoelen (pronounced schoo-len)!

The history of the house and the valley is very tangible, captured not only in the location and its beauty but also in the loving way the house is being brought back to life. Rene and Jeanette are amazing hosts and my stay here was just magical!
