We found it very difficult to get any decent information in English about the hotels in the area of the Gran Sasso National Park prior to our trip, perhaps due to the fact that so many had been damaged in the earthquake of 2009 that devastated L'Aquilia and its environs and were not open for business. We chose this hotel as it was situated right beneath the cable car that takes skiers and mountaineers up to the Campo Imperatore as we were going to climb Corno Grande, the highest peak in the Apennines, and we wanted to make an early start. It's location cannot be faulted.

There is parking in an open area outside the hotel that is situated close to a number of restaurants and a bar. The area is very popular with skiers and winter sports' enthusiasts, and it would probably be difficult to park if you arrived in the day during the high season.

The hotel was not very busy during our stay, yet it was quite noisy. The high ceilings and wooden floors created considerable echoes and we were woken early by slamming doors. I did not like our room at all which, although roomy, was spartanly furnished and the decor was awful, consisting of a sickly yellow sponge pattern effect on white walls. The bathroom was large, but annoyingly once the water was turned on the shower head fell off the wall spraying water everywhere and there was no curtain in the bath tub to prevent this from soaking the floor.

In its defence, I will say that the hotel was very warm, a thing important to those engaged in winter sports, and the breakfast was generous consisting of a variety of meats and cheese, bread, cakes, fruit, yoghurt and cereal, with great Italian coffee served by a pleasant waiter.

It's a shame the hotel doesn't give itself a face lift as the whole place felt a trifle gauche for the money we paid and there are certainly better value choices in the immediate vicinity; consequently we left after just one night.
