I loved this part of the trails that are near the riverfront area in Lynchburg. It has a great mix of sun and shade. Cool little cave/tunnel you can walk through.

While enjoying a weekend in downtown Lynchburg, we did not have to venture far in order to get in a nice long walk/hike. What is nice is you can choose from the wide, paved rails-to-trails section, either for cycling, or running/walking or you can hike on natural trails......or do a combo as we did. There are many entrances and many intersections with decent signage so you can really customize your adventure. This is a real jewel for this city. We were on it on a sunny but cool Saturday morning and there were folks out and about. We always felt safe and hope that this is always the case for anyone on the trail.

We walked the trail for the first time this past weekend. There were quite a few runners, individuals, and family groups on the trail. That is a good thing. The trail we were on was paved and wide enough to permit easy two way foot traffic. The trail across the river looked like it became fine gravel. A couple of mom's had baby strollers on it so it had to be an easy surface to push those on. The foliage was not very pretty, being February, and there was a lot of cut down brush and trash along the river bank. No doubt there will be efforts to give this a spring cleaning. Coming up on the 450' tunnel was a cool surprise! I presume this trail was a railroad bed at some point in time. We look forward to walking it again later this spring or summer when we return to Lynchburg. Good job Lynchburg having these trails available to the public.

Lovely trail for the whole family. Watch out for copperhead snakes if you go during non-peak times. Great for spotting woodchucks and deer.

We love our bike ‍♀️ rides on the Blackwater Trail!! We start out near Waterstone Pizza downtown and ride all the way to Langhorne Rd entrance and then back to the very end of Percival Island. All total out and back for us is usually about 10 miles. Especially like going thru the old railroad tunnel (nice and cool) halfway up and also the Hollins Mill Park area--the dam is lovely with the waterfall. There was unusual sight of Canadian geese taking a break at the park on Sunday as we came thru. There are sheared rock faces, lovely ferns and wild flowers and also path goes along the water almost all the way. Trees are beautiful and entire trail pretty much shaded. Even the hottest days don't feel too hot. So lucky to have this right in the middle of Lynchburg!
