Extraordinary and exceptional stay

5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 4 Nov 2024via mobile
This is one of the most unique hotels we have stayed in. It is very traditional and slightly cut-off from the modern world but exceptional. The facilities are in keeping with the Victorian feel of the hotel; I have only seen some of the baths in National Trust properties before.
The gong for meals made us smile and the food was exceptional. We prefer a limited choice and to know what we get is beautifully cooked and sourced locally. The lamb and fish were as good as any Michelin restaurant we have eaten in.
The whole experience was made by the staff who were really considerate, helpful and friendly. They made everything so easy and were always keen to check we were happy and content.
This hotel will not suit everyone but if you want to get back to a simple existence with fabulous food in a stunning setting, I could not recommend it highly enough. Another plus, you beat the traffic for Snowdon as you can walk to the start.

Room Tip: Internet and reception are limited so be prepared to cut yourself off!

Located about a mile from the start of Snowdon/Crib Goch walk and Nant Peris valley. Ideal location for walkers, climbers and scramblers.

The room was economically priced but was cozy and well-presented.

Staff were very friendly and willing to help out with any issue.

If it's mod cons and flashy rooms you're after, this is not your place. Wifi is only available in odd places, and the beds are a bit ricketty. But if you want to go back in time to a more civilised era, then you'll love it. A gong invites you to excellent meals, with coffee served in the lounge where guests chat and play games. No en suites, but a plethora of hot water options after a long day hiking, with a couple of truly amazing Victorian surprises. Friendly and helpful staff who make you feel like family. Fabulously placed to explore Snowdonia, it describes itself as 'the home of British mountaineering', famously used as a base by Hilary and Tenzing. We fell in love with the place.

Fabulous one of a kind hotel. Steeped in climbing history, great guest lounges and bar. Games room, sauna, wild swimming lake. Not a TV in site!
Very good home cooked food served in the old fashioned way, dinner at 7.30, that's it. Staff are wonderful, can't praise the place highly enough. First visit for 23 years can't wait to go back. Thank you.

Room tip: Good website, book direct online.

Pen Y Gwryd is an institution and a joy. I have been many times and will return for many more. If you want telephones, TVs and beige blandness, go elsewhere. This hotel is authentic, traditional and walking in feels like putting on a beloved old warm coat. The service is excellent and the staff so friendly. It is the food that made me write this, my first Tripadvisor review. The food is excellent. My fiends had delicious meats and fish and for myself, a vegan, the chef conjured three memorable vegan main courses without a lentil in sight! He is a genius. And his soups....they make you look up and around wondering if everyone else is feeling the same! Superb. Thank you.

Myself and my 2 young sons had a fantastic stay at the hotel ahead of the boys' first walk up snowden. The hotel is steeped in mountaineering history and provided a very interesting and enjoyable visit. Staff were super friendly and very accommodating. The breakfast was also top notch - and they were happy to provide a packed lunch for our hike. Our 2 boys were invested into the hotel's Snowden Club - which they were both delighted with. All in all, a hotel stay which I am sure they'll remember for a lifetime. Thank you.

Room tip: If you have children ask about the Snowden Club. Be sure to check out every room in the bar area - every one is different and has some interesting items
